I’m running a budget setup, ran without a MyChron for almost 5 years now. Between the options, a MyChron 5 seems to be the best value for quality, at least that I’ve seen. Anyone know of a cheaper market / have used shopping tips? I Ideally don’t want to spend more than $400.
Head to your local track. Find someone with a shiny new Mychron 6 on the steering wheel. Ask if they are willing to sell their 5 that’s probably just sitting on a shelf collecting dust now. Should be able to snag one for under $400.
What do you hope to gain by having a display? If you are just looking for lap times, older units (4 or even 3) would be fine. If you hope to gain specific data about your lap you will likely want a 5 or 5s. Alfano 6 or 7 units are also desirable for this information.
I upgraded at the beginning of this season from a 5, to a 5s 2t. Definitely better being able to pull the data off the unit and analyze it. Even though I’m still very new to analyzing data, its super helpful.
I would highly recommend not going older than a M5 so you have GPS and current RS3 support. In reality, the M6 is worth the upgrade for the internal battery, WiFi and USB-C, steering angle, and to have current hardware.
I love my MyChron 5s and I have it set up to show me lights if I am under or over my best lap. I don’t “read” it, but I can glance at it to see if a certain corner triggered a difference in the lights. The more green lights you have, the faster you are. The more red lights you have, the slower you are. It enables me to see my performance in any particular turn as I exit it.
There are a few Mychron 4s around and they are good starters and a lot cheaper. I’m selling mine at The Karting Marketplace here:
Yeah. I basically just mucked around in the settings and found it. It’s called Predictive Lap Timing and that’s a (not so great) video that I just found on how to configure it.
