Last one for a while. He plans to continue karting, just not sure when or how.
What a radical idea!
How on earth is he driving with glasses! I know a handful of people that do it and it blows my mind.
I should hopefully make it out to a TSRS race next year.
My guy has been doing it since he started 25 years ago. The glasses and the helmet have to get along or it’s a disaster!
I’ve tried it. I even brought my helmet to my last eye doctor appointment. Nothing worked.
I got Lasik about 5 years ago (best money I’ve ever spent I think), but before that I had glasses since I was 6 years old. I raced a few times with them but they hurt my ears and they also kept getting sweaty and sliding down my nose. I usually raced with contacts, but in the rain or if you have an off, getting any dirt in there was a massive pain. Plus, they tended to dry out a lot and by the end of each day my eyes were always real dry and itchy. Racing without any vision correction was a no-go, as my prescription was -8.0/-7.75 so I couldn’t even see the MyChron if I had no glasses/contacts…
Other than a slight reduction in nighttime vision, Lasik has been such a massive quality-of-life improvement and I recommend it to anyone.
I can see how in road racing you probably can wear glasses a bit more easily since you generally aren’t launching curbs or being physically tossed around as much.
Frustratingly, my vision got weird in my 40s and i went from having freakishly high resolution to not being able to fully focus on anything anymore. Its not correctable, just age. I have to wear light magnifiers for normal distance vision, 1.25%, and it drives me nuts. I can relate to the glasses sliding down your nose etc. Also, I have a giant honker so finding glasses that are schnozz-appropriate aint easy.
I’ve been using an Arai SK6 with Roka glasses and never had a single issue with them. Maybe it’s because the Rokas don’t “curve” around your ears, they just go straight back but have little strips of rubber for grip so they don’t slip off or move around. The padding on the Arai is also a great shape for holding them in place without any discomfort.
My daughter took a couple of photos of my son with his trophies from this year. Part of me is glad the season is over. I think we raced all but 2 or 3 weekends since the spring. It wears you out after a while. I’m sure by the end of November I will be wishing it would warm up so we could start it all over again.
Sporty! Next race Thanksgiving weekend at The Podium Club.
Love this black and white ![]()
