Sim Racing Megatopic

I’m so reluctant. My pair of 7s have been bulletproof. I bought 8s and 9s and they were just no stop headaches.
I’m debating on getting a cambox. I want driver’s eye perspective, but we cant run an external camera on the helmet anymore. Maybe I could get away for a session or two by running this all incognito like.
For me reviewing footage at a track to get faster, the static shot off the side of the kart just doesn’t cut it.

I really hope F1 releases the internal camera they are working on to the public, but it’s still an off angle shot. I want straight ahead centered footage.

The 12: when 4k 60 hits after YouTube has buffered enough, it’s gorgeous. 10 bit color. It’s so good it’s almost creepy.

It’s also got a huge sensor. It can be used vertical, horizontal etc. it’s a big step up imho from my 10.

My trusty 7 is garbage in comparison. (It is simple and small tho).

Any issues with it just cutting out mid race or it making the classic GoPro beeps like it recording and it isn’t?

No. My 2nd 10 had that problem where it was bricking itself. The 12 has been perfect. I find that my video quality has gone waaaay up.

Here’s footage. Let it get to true HD.

Also, with hyper smooth I need to figure out exposure a bit, it seems to struggle indoors. I may need to raise ASA to 1600 from 800.

This was lightened in post. That’s the one thing with Gopro. Apparently they aren’t great low light.

No they don’t. It’s due to the image stabilization. If you turn that off you should see your low light improve at the cost of shaky-ness.

Not sure what the settings are on the 12, but I’ve found on all my GoPros you want to set both on ISO and white balance manually to prevent them from trying to auto adjust exposure.

Also that place looks awesome! Really flowing. It would be so much fun to have two story kart track built for sprint karts.

Ahhh. I tried ev+1 stop and it made things darker lol!

That makes sense. With the 2.0 lens mod I am using what is called MAX Hyperview which is their strongest stabilization (in camera).

I will have to check to see if shooting without max Hyperview and then using ReelSteady would be different.

It would! Infind that these indoor tracks drive really differently than out long outdoor tracks. These are fun in that they are “busier” tracks with constant elevation and camber changes between corners.

I’m guessing cambox is pretty much it then if you can mount on helmet and you don’t like kart mount provided.

I just had a big brain moment:

Arai/Gopro helmet combined. Integrated.

I’d pay 1500 for such a thing actually. I would want super high quality camera though. You’d have to replace helmet every 3-5years (which you do anyways).

@KeslerDesignWorks since you looked at heat 2… do me a favor and now look at heat 1. Tell me how the experience of viewing the footage changed with kart sound in heat 1 versus quiet kart in heat 2. I am curious how you perceive it differently, if at all.

For what it’s worth, there is a “kartpulse” karting server in live for speed. I set it up on a whim but haven’t done anything with it.

Kart racing pro could be another option too.

Would be fun to host a monthly group race! I find it odd that iRacing hasn’t done karts.

I want to try putting 1,000 or 1,500 lb/inch springs on each corner of the iRacing FF or the USF 2000 car just to see what it feels like.

Part of the problem with karts is they are difficult to model the physics of and would require scans of all new tracks that would only be used for karting. Big investment.

The drone scan version of DKC that Hooves made is/was pretty fun. Laser scanned is better but it wasn’t bad!

True but there seems to be a hole in the market. Their physics engines seems to be flexible enough to sim everything from F1 to off-road trucks.

Just start with Tskuba it’s small enough for karts :slightly_smiling_face:

I got the impression that it’s not that hugely expensive to laserscan. The equipment, while expensive, isn’t crazy expensive and is rentable I believe. I recall some discussion on kk but I don’t recall specifics.

Yea you can rent the stuff. It’s compiling all the data and turning it into something usable that’s expensive.

Hey does anyone understand hastags and stuff?

I’m pretty clueless about that and I am probably doing a crap job of tagging my channel stuff.
I put keywords but it appears there’s more to it than that.

In the phone app, it suggests hastags like #360life etc. I have no idea what that means, really. I think if you put that on the video, it will show up in that search field, which I guess folks sub to?

Any suggestions as to how better get my stuff in front of karters rather than hoping algo does it for me automatically? I suspect that there’s a way to help it better than I am.

on a related note: I found this guy’s settings for 4k OBS stuff very helpful! I realized i was doing OBS 2.7k, doh.

Would this indicate that your video was created using the GoPro 360 feature/functionality?

It would. When you upload it seems to recognize the footage.
