Do different stiffness axles do anything?

Well, at least I will now remember the order!

These are good. My interpretation was always:

U- ā€œusually stays in the trailerā€
Q- ā€œquestionable purchaseā€
N- ā€œneed this oneā€
H- ā€œhelps to have this one tooā€
HD- I always forget about this one, and I don’t think I can top your description
HH- ā€œHahahaā€ …the OTK people laughing at you for not being able to make the kart work with the other axles :joy:

This is the moment I realized I was talking to the guy whose chassis tuning video I’ve watched a least a dozen times. I didn’t know that was you but honestly it’s been the best resource I have so thank you.

Glad it’s been helpful!

I’m hoping to do deep dive videos on different chassis adjustments throughout the year, but as always I don’t know where I’ll find the time… I want to do a vlog from when I race this year, and show how we work on stuff on the fly at the track.

That axle explanation should be on a shirt :joy:

So what’s the nickname for a A. Do to a shortage of H I had to settle for an A. I have found I actually quite enjoy it.

I haven’t used it yet so I haven’t named it.

What do you like about it?

So for our northwest tracks it has actually given me decent adjustability for the cold mornings but still able to get free enough as the sun heats things up.

Due to a sudden rain storm I had to toss a rain setup and it worked quite well vs the H I would have normally had in.

Basically it seems like it’s a great option for the region. But now that we are getting passed the rain season I’ll be swapping for my Hs

I also enjoy a little more front than some. And the A seems to be working real well with that.

Da fuk is an ā€œaā€? Is it new? Between N and H I always just went cut N instead.

Coming off a year of a few bent axles I need to order a couple, would love to hear more feedback on A ….esp vs cut N

Yeah A is in between N and H. It is new. I haven’t run a cut N much. I have one in the trailer. But typically just moved between the N and H. I was going to a track that everyone complained about it taking a ton of rubber. And my last N was on my other chassis. So it was either A or HH as nowhere local had an H in stock I decided to go A and it ended up working quite well

Is there a rule of thumb for when a thread conversation morphs into a topic way different than the title? Unsure if I should keep talking about my axle experience here or link it to the axle hardness thread and continue the discussion over there where it’s more relevant.

I gotchu fam. Moved axle talk to the axle thread. Carry on.

I went ahead and ordered the OTK HD axle (they didnt have an H that was keyed for an inboard clutch) to try out for the next race. I hope this helps with my hopping issue. The axle currently in my kart is the Swift N. I also had to order longer hubs because the new axle is 1030mm where my old one is 1040mm and the only set of hubs I have are too short to get me to max width incase I need to. I imagine this will also affect the inside wheel lift and set down. I hope the HD gives me the ability to adjust castor and play with seat struts as well.

Can we say ā€œAā€ for axle? As in it’s probably not too different than the others, so just drive the wheels off the damn thing?

These nicknames actually got me lolling

@tjkoyen i actually copied and pasted that in a word doc and printed for my track notes folder.

I did site my source like a good student

Seems appropriate that we call the A axle ā€œAmberā€ given current popular culture.

Is that the axle you use when you’ve shit the bed?

I’ll add more fun to this topic. Revisiting a couple of videos on youtube and something stuck out that I’ve never considered in prepping for this season.

I ran KA Sr. the last couple of years but always raced 10-15lbs over…I’m mid 40’s and fat and that’s the best I could get. Decided to be super fat this winter which is going to force me to run Masters this year. In pre-season testing the kart still seems pretty ok at 390…I mean it’s a little lazy but it’s not a ton different from where it was last year at slightly above 370.

Question I have is should I consider my baseline axle for the kart one stiffer than standard because of the extra weight I’m carrying around now?

Most guys I know running Masters on the 30mm still use N as the baseline. It’s such a versatile spot to start that I don’t think 20 lbs is going to make a huge difference.

I know way back in the day when I ran HPV Lite and Heavy on back-to-back days, we didn’t change much in setup from one class to the other. That was with a 40 lbs difference (Lite @ 320, Heavy @ 360). Certainly weren’t changing axles from one day to the other, and we were quick in both. There were little things to tweak like track widths, as the Lite kart would be a bit more lively and free, which needed to be settled down compared to the Heavy kart, which felt more stable.
