Apart from power steering, F1 got none of that. We are still talking about 1000-1050hp RWD cars without TC …
I do agree I would like to see smaller and lighter cars though.
Anyway, the race was ok. Lando still shits the bed, my guy never learns. Oscar is my clear favorite for the championship. At least mentally he is mega strong.
I don’t see the correlation between more horsepower, less weight, and imminent death.
Having said that, for me to respect or take anything seriously the element of danger has to be present. Motor racing used to be very manly and has become more like a children’s sport in this sense. I don’t care about safety, but I come from a hill climb background and I also fight. It’s part of what appeal(ed) to me about karts before the mandatory rear bumpers. The driver’s are more like children and the cars are basically bubble wrapped computers now.
If the drivers had the mentality of the post war era and the cars were derestricted I would be a die hard fan. Lol @ your comment about Lando shitting the bed. It’s true!
That’s an interesting take. The last part gave me a chuckle. People get hurt/killed still today even with the extreme measure of safety in motorsports. There’s already an element of danger.
If you watch racing for the crashes, maybe racing isn’t for you. I hear the UFC is pretty dangerous though!
To be fair, racing with zero consequence isn’t as interesting as racing with big consequences. It is a balancing act and everyone’s got different tolerances.
Personally, much as I adore dirt oval crazy stuff like chili bowl or the big sprint cars… I’d be scared to drive them because I know I’d want to drive them like they need to be driven and the risks are just too damn high.
I do really like that I have zero fear in my racing. It becomes a lot more granular to me when your comfort level is 100.
Higher speeds means higher speed when crashing, which means that current tracks might not be safe as well.
Also reducing the weight will reduce the capacity of the chassis to protect the driver.
I do think the key is indeed in smaller and lighter cars, but not in more powerful cars. If anything, I would like to see the current engine without the electrical part, higher fuel flow and roughly 900hp for 650-700kg
I definitely don’t watch racing for crashes. What appeals to me about racing is also what appeals to me about fighting: high-level problem solving with dire physical consequences. Watching someone do this effortless is what makes us go “wow.”
100% down to see this. 900hp for 650kg would be very entertaining especially with no impeding electrical assistance. Sign me up!
I wrote a long reply to this and then looked up the name to watch some onboard. That’s hilarious!
I guess teams are waiting on the Hermann/Russell potential move. Not sure Franz is going to stay at Redbull. The leadership is quite unstable, they lost Newey ahead of the new regs, they are going to build their own PU for the first time in their history. RB is not looking so hot right now.
