No fair. Its all dudes from the 50’s when it was rich old guys. Now its rich old guys paying for young guys to race because winning and stuff. I bet the same could be said of golf.
I wonder if Fast and Furious was more profoundly impactful in terms of car culture (but likely not racing).
For those of you who haven’t seen it, Logan Lucky is very good. It seems my favorite “racing” movies aren’t about racing but have racing in the periphery of the story (ie Talladega Nights, Logan Lucky).
FYI the new Guy Ritchie movie The Fountain of Youth opens with a legit awesome scooter chase through Bangkok. Made me think of Ronin (best car chase ever).
It is important to remember to strap your helmet. You never can tell when the mob gonna box you in.
For those of us who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, the first few F&F movies were INCREDIBLY formative for our generation of car nerds. That plus Gran Turismo. Hence 90s and 2000s Japanese cars exploding in value the past decade. Millennials who grew up loving those pieces of media finally got to the age they could splurge on FD RX-7s, Supras, Skyline GTRs and weirdo vans if you’re like me. Boomers had muscle cars, we have Japanese tuner cars. The next generation will probably covet these fist-gen EVs, though I don’t know if car culture will be as enthusiastic toward the mass of commodity/appliance vehicles that are overburdened with tech and devoid of any real passion.
Oof. BBC gave it a 2/5
“The biggest issue with F1, though, is not its insistence on showing its leading man in a flattering light, but its equivalent, fawning attitude towards Formula One itself. Shot on real circuits with the full co-operation of the organisers and participants (Lewis Hamilton is credited as a producer), it’s essentially a glossy corporate promotional film with so much distracting product placement that you’re more likely to remember the brand names than the characters. There is no wisp of criticism or scepticism, and no hint of anything exploitative or sleazy.”
A bit rich coming from the BBC.
