How to look for pace

Then you want to make the rear as wide as permitted. If you increase the rear grip you might lose the RPMs, thus losing speed.

EDIT : Also as a usual practice, you always want to run as wide as possible in the rear. This allows for a smoother, more progressive and also a better handling when going on throttle. It might feel like you lack rear grip, but it is usually due that you lack finesse in the driving style.

Narrow works if the track doesn’t have too much grip. Once the grip comes up, narrow may not be good. There are many threads here on this site about freeing up the kart and there a lot of ways to accomplish to getting there. Another suggestion is to clearly find out if its you or the kart by having one of the faster guys drive your kart during practice. Plus you will have some terrific data on your MyChron.

Setup for road racing in a low HP kart is very different a sprint track. The fastest karts tend to be pretty narrow on the rear as going too wide just binds the kart up on long turns with small steering angles. There’s an argument to be made for aero too.

You want to keep the inside rear as unloaded as possible for as long as possible through the turns. Narrow track, softer rear setup and just the right amount of caster or scrub radius to keep entry speed up.

IMO, it makes the karts unpleasant to drive because it’s a bit ā€œteeter totteryā€ but it’s more challenging to drive than it looks. Sure it’s often flat out all the way around but the steering inputs are super nuanced.

Sounds like you might have a bit of a fuel delivery problem Eli?

If you were able to have a few instances of speed, then it is likely not an engine ā€œdown on powerā€. To James’ point, it very well could be a fuel delivery issue (clogged jets, plugged filter, bad pump, etc) that is showing itself intermittently.

I think its time for a once-over on the kart. Check fuel lines, fuel filter, clean jets, lean clutch, check chain, check rear axle (bearings, side to side movement, bind, etc), check chassis for cracks.

When I get frustrated like this, I go back to offseason mode and start from scratch. Check everything on the kart. Make sure everything is 100% perfect before I go back on the track. Then (like it usually is), I can be 100% sure the issue is the guy sitting in the seat.

I’ll probably do that at some point. My kart is stored at my teams warehouse so I’ll drive down sometime

That’s exactly what I thought in terms of setup. I’d just be dragging the rear wheel around long full speed turns if I had a wider rear. The guy that won both races was all the way narrow in the rear.
What confuses me is how he was able to walk away without the draft.
I may have had instances of speed but even than I was 17th fastest in terms of bast lap time on Sunday. I had a solid 5 laps or so with a draft probably.

Is there any tech at your track?

Can you become friends with a tuning genius?

From my enduro kart experience, (a zillion years ago ~ 50 years), I was a believer in full narrow on big tracks for aero and rear axle drag reasons. Many years ago (less than a zillion ~ 20 years) we ran at a big track (Moran Raceway) with our Yamahas and I ran full narrow all the time and it was fast during club events, even with a crappy kart. During one those years the IKF Grand was held at Moran, I had a new TonyKart and I ran my full narrow setup. For the first days of practice it was fast, maybe running 1/2 or 3/4 sec faster than the track record. I thought I would win the Grand Nationals. Then as more karts hit the track with fresh rubber, the grip came up my kart slowed way down as the tires picked up massive rubber, like a Kid Kart and I was lost in where to go with my setup. In retrospect, I should have been widening the kart to get it slide more. Lesson learned here the kart needs to be constantly adjusted for for the track grip.

Engines are sealed and there is tech, and fuel testing. I highly doubt he bends the rules, especially since im close to on par with him at other tracks.

No one wants to give up their tuning secrets to a kid :joy:
I would love to have someone I know is quick take a shot in my kart but we have 0 practice days and limited practice sessions. x1 had open practice every week, I could use that about now. It was a hot day, and rubber was starting to get laid down, so maybe that was part of the problem.
I have a ton of questions but cant find any answers. Everything about my pace vs others was so odd and inconsistent. I cant wait to get back to normal tracks.
I can upload all my videos here soon. maybe you guys see something I dont. Dont worry @Bimodal_Rocket ill put time tags in so you dont fall asleep
I’ll go pick up my mychron too and look at he data. Would I see the possible fuel flow problem in the data at all?

Are you sure about that? Tanguy was always pissed at me when I’d tell Ben what he was doing wrong at NJMP. Some of us just can’t keep our mouths shut.

Anyways, I might be wrong.

Maybe its the arrive and drive aspect. It seems to be slightly frowned upon at the club level. I think that may play a role in it

Elias – Post a pix of your tires.

Good idea. when I head down to the shop I’ll snap a few

I dont remember that. Maybe because I am always pissed

To be clear I wasn’t insinuating anyone was blatantly cheating.

That reminds me…. Someone pulling away in a draft like that is gearing/power or aero.

Getting your shoulders down and out of the wind can make a big difference. Get down as low as you legally can within the regs. Usually there are some minimum seat height regs to be aware of.

His seat is laid down pretty low, might be a part of it. I’m also 6’ so that doesn’t help either. Good news is the rest of the season is away from that track
