Seeking help/feedback on kart setup for a hard compound tire on asphalt

We’re on 180mm DWT wheels.

I think it would be very beneficial to link up with a coach as well to look at video or data on the driver.

Always seat struts all the time on an AM29? This could be what is wrong with our Kart too. I hadn’t thought of Seat Struts! Matt Burpo, do you sell these?

So I wanted to update this thread for a couple of reasons: 1) to thank Matt Burpo and other forum members who provided suggestions on setup, and 2) to report back on the impact of the changes.

I essentially set the kart up as Matt suggested in the post dated March 25th. Since then, a bunch of stuff has happened within our club, so I hadn’t had a chance to set aside time for some testing. I made a few small changes here and there for the races since then and have seen some improvement, notably with tire pressure change. But, my driver still struggled with oversteer and a knife-edge chassis…

Until today!

We did several rounds of testing, and with Matt’s suggested setup, the kart is FINALLY where we need it to be! It’s slightly loose and very catchable (which fits my drivers style nearly perfectly), and has demonstrated cornering performance we’d only dreamed of until now. My driver made a pass on their sibling - on the outside - of a 90 degree left hander, and I couldn’t believe my eyes - there was no way the kart would have done that before. We are now approximately 2.5 seconds faster, with my driver showing much more confidence - which I hope translates to even faster lap times!

Huge thanks to Matt and all who contributed, I very much appreciate it!

Did you change the axle? What do you think was the most impactful change? I have been struggling big time on the AM-29 feeling “knife edge” as you describe. I changed to the F axle, which is harder, and that helped a bit.

I think the front alignment made the biggest difference. We started in the back with the axle, then seat position and struts (we had two on each side), then track width. Did some testing, got marginally better but still very knife edge. Then installed the front torsion bar (we’d been running without it) and set the alignment to Matt’s recommendation and that sealed the deal. My driver is a bit aggressive (been trying to get them to smooth out, but that’s another story), so the kart now responds and is more neutral and forgiving.

Hope this helps!

Your description sounded very similar to my own issues trying to start with a 53.5 rear track on am 29 with tilly 225. I narrowed the rear to 50 .3 and put the front at 1 small 1 large spacer. it calmed it down and i did not spin on my last session./ still dont feel i am getting all the grip possible down 1 or 2 mph from what ive seen . next step for me is the seat struts i got the left side installed but needed some help on what to get for the right side. asked about 180 rims was told to run the 210s as the local track k1 circuit has to much grip generally . will try the struts first getting sniper to set alignment on wednesday. will see where im at after this and do the wheels to 180 if im stiill not there
