Sim Racing Megatopic

Thanks fellas. I tried AMP but got lost in the shuffle. If gopro runs rentals year round, that seems like a good possibility. I will call, thanks!

Still bloody waiting.

My address starts with ‘Villa SE132”

The muppets at Amazon keep sending my stuff to industrial zone SE132 which is 50km away, it goes back and forth then gets returned to seller

Annoying thing is no electrical stores sell the lead I need

Day 1, Oran Park: Hero to Zero

The last couple days of Southern National were a lot of fun. I had gotten very comfortable with the car, track and oval after spending the first part of the week working it out.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that Oran is also going to require some work.

I wasn’t feeling like jumping in and crashing my way through the first laps so I did some practice sessions. I also tried the ghost racing.

Ghost racing is a very cool and somewhat hidden feature of iRacing. Here is how to do it: instead of joining a race to drive, join as a spectator. When the game loads, where it usually says “Drive” it will say “test a car”. Hop in. Once you are in car it’s exactly like being on track, except they can’t see you and you can’t hit them.

I wasn’t really in the mood last night to grind, so I did not make huge progress. I did manage to get the start of a line together and ran some .07 laps.

From ghost racing, I saw that the races were sort of a mess since everyone is in same boat. So, I hopped in a race and qualified 3rd. Unfortunately I spun myself out a couple time early on, as expected, but made my way back to 6th.

I am guessing that like last week, by Friday I will have the track under control. I am hopeful that it comes quicker this time. We shall see.

finally got iracing and my pc set up anyone recommend any tracks or cars that a lot of people race

Get on the skip barbers to begin with. Excellent fun and kind of a momentum car, similar driving principal to a kart. The more you can keep the revs up and maintain momentum with minimal and smooth steering, the faster you’ll be.

Hope to catch you at Long Beach this week

I need to do some pit lane start SR farming

It sort of depends on which way you want to go. Iracing has sprint, oval, dirt oval, sprint/rally.

Most folks who want to do “racecars” start in the Miata I think and then graduate to next step.

Tracks change every week for the official series. You will likely need to buy a track if you don’t own the weekly one.

How does one farm SR in pit lane?

i hate when you get punted trying to get your sr upi did my first race yesterday at leguna seca and for 6 laps me and this other guy has a good battle for 5th we swapped placed like 20 times the some other driver cut the corkscrew to hit me

Start from the pit lane (don’t grid) and avoid the start and first corner melee. Drive around all the crashes, drive steady don’t fight anyone. SR boosts up in no time

Ah. I thought you meant like go chat with the other dudes in the pits and get your Social Rating up.

I’ll stop you right here. You must change your thinking when it come to iRacing. You are at fault for everything. Embrace that.

If you wanna do well here, pay attention to the vehicles in front of you. Watch them and look for mistakes and try to be ahead of all of their crashes.

Re: people behind

Nothing screws up your race more than getting punted by an inpatient (or incompetent) passer.

So, consider wether the position you are in matters. If it’s a lapped car and they are in a rush to make spots back, let him by. No skin off your nose.

In short, know when to fight, learn when to chill. Managing the field is huge here, particularly in lower splits.

I’ll post my last oval race. It’s 66 laps but Jesus the number of spin cars and wrecks I avoid throughout the race is nuts. You really have to be eyes forwards and anticipating chaos.

Also, you can use traffic and chaos to your advantage… if there’s a bunch of guys battling, you can hang back a bit and apply pressure at appropriate times… see if you can create an opportunity.

Typical iracing incident frequency.

I’ve watched a couple of your videos. One of your onboards at AMP and the video AMP posted about you on their FB.

I’m going to start off by saying that I know you are a better driver than I am, but I’m am old guy who reached a decently high level in a different sport.

Use iRacing to learn how to drive through frustrating situations and keep your calm. I’ve noticed that when you get bumped in the kart you like to throw hands. Learn how to moderate your emotions just like you moderate your gas and brake. Keep your hands on the wheel and stay calm when things go wrong, practice this in iRacing and translate it to real karting. You’ll be a better driver for it.

What is the significance of week 13?

“For all those who are new, we remind you that week 13 on iRacing.com, is a week of rest between different builds, where iRacing takes the opportunity to launch a new update. In addition, the service bring us a series set so that all iRacers can enjoy the competition in a more fun way thanks to the unofficial series, being able to increase their iRating or their Safety Rating/License in a simple way.”

Don’t understand. Do we reset ir/sr?

“whenever people refer to Week 13 they mean the end of the season which could also be seen as an off week for those that are running full seasons as they can decide not to compete without suffering any penalty or not earning points. This makes the week overall less serious as there essentially is nothing to gain or lose, besides having a blast on the track.”

So if it’s week 13, the pure formula driving school (USF 2000) seems to be still on.

It’s a week off from official races. End of the season, so they offer a bunch of ridiculous fun series instead of official racing. No SR or iR gains or losses so you can just chill and run some silly stuff.

Ok so I can either do the fun stuff, with no worries or continue doing the real stuff which still appears to count?

Oran park: day 2

I think it’s time to deal with my braking. My friend, Tanguy has been on my case about braking for a while now. Also, Will Salisbury has also chimed in, suggesting that perhaps I should consider changing things up.

I am not sure why but I have my brakes set very tight, where lock is at a 2/10, force wise. I have always liked having very quick brakes. I tend to try to peel off bits of speed with little grabs of the brake. I also like how the quick brakes can be used to create moments of rotation.

What Tanguy is saying is that I need to make my brakes have much larger travel. He is seeing not enough initial brake application, basically. So, he wants me to set it at 5 and relearn how to brake, with more initial force.

I have been putting this off as it’s a major thing. Oran is making me want to either go back to Oval (which I was enjoying and getting the hang of) or figure this out so I can move forwards.

No, most of the official series wont run during that week
