Got my ass kicked today. First I did the GT4 race at Charlotte, but accidentally loaded an old setup from a previous tire model so my brake balance was all screwed up and the car was completely sideways every time I breathed on the pedal. I crashed on the first lap.
Then entered a Production Car race in the MX-5 at Lime Rock, a very fun go-kart-esque track in that car, and was holding strong in 4th, defending hard and got pit-maneuvered by a guy sticking his nose in on the outside.
Tried another one of those later, and the leader just didn’t go on the green flag, stacked up the whole field and about four rows of cars accordianed into each other, giving me 4x and damage right away. I tried to be aggressive into one as others were recovering from the stack up, and again got pit maneuvered, though this time I probably could’ve given more room on the inside, but I was mad and being a little too aggressive.
I think tonight I’m going to practice and enter a couple GT4 races. The Production Car at Lime Rock seems to be kind of a crapshoot because the track isn’t that technical, and the D class license requirement means a lot of inexperienced guys bring questionable racecraft and can keep up because the track is easy. Seems too easy to get bu-fu’d. GT4 is more tame and a bit more polished.
Main thing: I’m way more precise. Like I can repeat corners easily, and I’m not over turning on exit anymore. You can also easily feel if you’re pushing.
Car has weight to it now, it’s easier to drive side GT side in a turn.
My arms are tired. This is amazing.
Just did another Production Car race because I’m a glutton for punishment and started in the back for SR because I’m about to be demoted…
P24 to P9 at the end and was close to 8th. So much fun passing all those cars.
Lol I did my Jetta race for participation since I was gone all week, then jumped in advanced mazda. Gained iR in top split so I can’t complain about that.
The rest of the night might just end up being various cars around the nordschleife
Lining up in the back of another one now… 15 Mustangs in this one… yeeesh. I’m gonna be doing the dodgeball method.
Dodge, duck, dip, dive, dodge.
Yup, that was me. I think I asked if you post here on the voice chat.
Do we have a KartPulse Discord for this? I rarely get to do this much iRacing (wife is out of town) so I’m not up to date.
24th to 6th in that one. It’s fun but damn is it hard to stay clean starting from the back in multi-class D level races.
I don’t drive in the sim much because I don’t have time, but I can definitely feel some of the rust getting shaken off and some of the normal racer synapses firing back up after a long winter.
Just did a race where I quailed 10 and finished 10 and boy was it crazy.
I have been having some good battles but not very much extended pack racing in races up till now.
Tonight’s race was a very tightly packed split and it was fierce. I got a great start and took and held 5th for a good while. I gave back ground, and, as the ebb and flow would have it, I finish right where I belonged, 10th.
Fantastic fun. Vr big oval racing is absolutely bonkers. I am kinda hooked.
I decided to give KartKraft a go with the DD. I believe all of the handling issues @tjkoyen and I have experienced have something to do with Logitech wheels.
Every time I lost it was entirely due to me coming in too hot, and it always sat the rear down and spun instead of staying jacked and over rotating. I’ve also noticed that was something that was going on with my old wheel in iRacing.
Off road trucks are difficult to drive with a GT3 wheel. Especially when one of the paddles is your hand brake.
Myles,
Question: as the tires come off the ability to get the car from the top (turn in) to bottom gets harder (no surprise). What seems to be happening is the car struggles to rotate once the tires start coming off. So, instead, you start pushing with the fronts.
Is that accurate to irl? Secondly, it occurred to me that perhaps, as the tires get old, that a dab of brake at turn in to get the car rotated more at turn in (given the pushing) would be smart.
Thotts?
Also, the new expansion for Destiny is out so my charge to Nascar greatness will be delayed as Nick and I work on our “light levels”:
As the tires fall off in real life, the drivers usually will seek out the top line, as it’s a bigger radius around the turn. The bottom line usually is always faster in iracing but the problem comes in when you need all the track for corner exit and someone is hanging on your right rear. I ran an Xfinity race last night where I started 13th, and fell back to 20th almost instantly, by the end of 33 laps I worked up to 3rd, and probably would have won if I had 2 more laps or so.
To compensate for the tires falling off, turn in earlier and get to the white light faster, letting the car roll the center (coasting/minimal throttle), roll on the throttle and open up the steering. The hardest part about tires falling off is that it’s hard to control steering input, as I struggle with wanting to turn left more, but all that is doing is killing the RF, usually happens because at the beginning you have so much grip to just send it off in the corner and apply throttle pretty aggressively, and that’s killing the RR tire. So as the right rear gives up, you start relying on the RF to do the work, and that’s when the push effect comes in.
The exit on ovals is just as important as it is in karting, so the ability to back your entry up and get the car slowed down and rotated and straight as fast as possible is key. Especially at a big oval like Cali. It’s super hard to be aggressive, but patient on iRacing when everyone in front or behind you is pushing it 100%.
Las Vegas wont be as punishing on tires as Cali was, just wait until Atlanta comes around. The tire fall off is even more brutal and it will really test your wits.
Thanks. I’m gonna have to work on understanding the high line. It’s so strange to me how they ride the outside without sliding into wall.
Any thoughts on the setup after a few weeks?
Was it worth the coin and the wait?
There’s definitely a learning curve. My iRating has dropped a couple hundred. It no longer feels like a toy, the rig shakes less, and it tries to rip my arms off. Well worth the wait.
Oh and it’s quiet.
I need to decide on a round wheel now.
