IIRC I believe 100LL has even less lead than like MS98 and sunoco C12.
Oh shoot I had no idea! I know lead is an octane booster and helps lubricate some engines, not sure which applies for karts.
You may be thinking of ethanol when it comes to damaging engines. But even then when used correctly ethanol is completely fine. But misuse will result in some damage over time.
Yeah, some CRG parts aren’t compatible with OTK, which makes sense
Yep, thats why he’s going to try to trade them. Still makes no sense why the CRG guy tossed them.
Go to a national/regional event and start dumpster diving. We hosted USPKS a few weeks ago. We had 2 full size dumpsters full of tires. We had club members showing up and pulling hundreds of tires out of them.
Also if you go to the Supernats or the CIK FIA World Championship of either OK or KZ check the bins and dumpsters and you will find spare parts in good conditions like axles, steering columns, tie rods, etc. My older brother was crying inside when his luggage wasn’t as long as an axle
my biggest savers are going to the ovka swap meet and getting relatively proficient with fiberglassing my seats.
@LRMcDouble same here brother. Does anyone have a resource that can explain in simple terms how to rebuild a KA top end?
I have another tip, browse the inventory at your local thrift stores. I got a pair of driving shoes for 10 bucks and luckily they were my size. They seem like they’ve only been worn once or twice.
Racing shoes at a thrift store is a new one. I would’ve never thought they would have anything.
I bought new boots this year and opted for color matching wrestling shoes because they were only $50. Hard to justify $150 for the nice FreeM ones when you only race four times a year.
Things we’ve learned:
Buy the nicer rear sprockets that last much longer
Do the KA100 top end rebuilds yourself
Push for harder compound tires, the Hooiser R70 lasted 5-6 club race days for our KA Masters.
Making your brother place Comet orders saves me a bunch of money
Why not just take his CC from his wallet and bypass him entirely?
I wouldn’t have thought so either but I wouldn’t count on them having any, especially suits and jackets. Up til now I’ve been using a 23 dollar pair of knockoff Walmart Jordans. Cheap shoes for the win not like I’m walking in them.
How do you handle the honing? I was led to believe you want to match the size piston available to the amount of honing done.
My big money savers are the following:
Dumpster dive for tires; I go to the STARS race at New Castle every year usually to watch but also to get a good collection of MG yellows coming home with me after the race.
Being my own mechanic. This may sound rudimentary but in all honesty there are a ton of racers out there who don’t know how to work on their own karts. Doing most of the maintenance yourself saves you boat loads of money and shows you how to set your kart up.
I (or rather my dad, who is a much better woodworker than me) built our trailer. It’s based on a harbor freight trailer but is wide enough so that the entire kart fits inside, as well as is covered (though sadly not waterproof) with a top that lifts off vertically so I can get inside and tie the kart down. I’ll post pictures in the trailer thread later on since I’ve been meaning to do this.
Lastly, I use Mondokart as my main supplier of expensive parts, and only place an order with them when its going to be a lot so that it offsets the shipping cost.
Write and make videos about karting that earn a few pennies for me, and that off-sets most of the cost for my once every 5 year project ha
2x the wrestling shoes.
Wide receiver gloves instead of karting gloves. I actually like them better
Pre-painted Arai helmet instead of a custom painted one (sorry TJ)
Buy used karting accessories like a kart stand.
FIA now have homlolgations for boots, so that loophole will get closed eventually. Can’t have karters saving money.
