Advice on kart for sale

Hi all,

I’ve been wanting to get into karting for a bit now and ive come up across what i think is a pretty great deal.

I know that the kart comes with a briggs lo206, which is exactly what im looking for since the track i will be going to has a class specifically for that engine. I’m not too sure if there is a regulation for frames, brakes, gas tank size, or other things. Attached is the kart for sale. Can anyone identify the frame and/or other important details? If you have any questions ill do my best to answer them! Thank you for your time!

What are they asking price wise? This will help steer us on if it is a good value or not. Are you wanting to race competitively? Or just hot lap for fun?

What tracks do you plan running at? Are you thinking of turning laps at first or competitive racing?

Some quick observations on that specific kart. Don’t know if it’s actually been raced recently? It looks like it’s generally in good shape however the chassis is 20 years old, or more. Chassis after 2004 no longer had the diagonal bars at the front of the sidepod bracket. So this would be pre 2004 with some newer plastics on it.

Brakes on karts from that’s era can be a bit of a pain, so if the seals have been replaced recently that’s a bonus.

Your track may ask require you to run a “pushback” front bumper. That’s going to add a couple hundred dollars. Most modern karts have these already.

The engine itself will likely only be useful for practice days as it’s unlikely theres a class for it.

In short, if that kart is $800ish, it might be worth a go. If you plan racing and your budget is higher, hold off for something more modern with an engine that is supported in a class. Briggs 206 is the most sensible option in most cases.

Brilliant, thank you! The kart listed was 1200 but knowing that its pretty dated is good to know. I plan on getting into this sport for fun and later competitively, so with that in mind it looks like id want to look towards newer chassis.

Yes. I personally wouldn’t pay that much for such an old chassis. You should be able to find something much newer with an engine that would be close to race ready for around 1200 to 1500.

Awesome! Do you recommend any specific sites to find them for sale? I’ve been mostly keeping an eye on local listings on fb marketplace

The best place to find used karts is at your local track or asking local shops. They both usually have used stuff for sale, and the bonus then is you build a relationship with a local shop that supports that brand of kart in the area so you have a resource for parts and tuning advice.

Awesome, thank you! I really appreciate all of your help and it is nice meeting you!

As TJ said. Head on over to your local track on a race weekend, meet some people, and ask around. Your best bet is to buy from a fellow racer versus some random person flipping items on Craigslist or Facebook.

Where are you located? Some people here may be able to help you as well. I also would not be afraid to piece what you want together. Find a decent chassis, and you might find a used motor but might be better off with a new motor. Again ask around at your local track and there might be racers looking to move to a different class wanting to sell as well. End of the season is a buying opportunity.

Are you sure that is a Briggs Lo206? It’s hard to see in the picture but my first thought was a clone. If you haven’t already you may want to check.

I’m located in Santa Maria. Piecing together parts sounds like a great idea as well. I really enjoy tinkering around so i definitely wouldnt mind doing something like that. If it was cheaper i’d definitely prefer it.

Good question, tbh im not too knowledgeable with karts yet although i do have a major interest in learning. The listing said lo206 but theres a chance that it could be a clone since it looks like the seller doesnt really know much about the kart to begin with. After hearing how old the chassis is i searched around a bit and found a 2017 praga ipk dark with the briggs lo206, a second set of wheels and more tires to go with it. Its 2k rn nut the only prob is its a bit further from me. I plan to take a trip there this weekend anyway tl visit family though so i can at least view it in person.

Hey @ReactJSX ! I’m based on the Central Coast and I’m on the board at SMKA. I thought I recognized this listing - saw it on Marketplace recently. We have an older chassis with a 206 that we’re going to look to sell pretty soon as well, so that may be another option for you.

Feel free to DM me. Glad to help you find a decent setup locally.

Hey, nice to meet you, Shadi! I’m Ethan. I really appreciate the offer, i will absolutely put it in consideration. What make/model is it and what are you looking to get for it?

Nice to meet you, Ethan! I just got some info from the board - looks like it’s a pretty old, beat-up chassis, so it may not be the best fit for you.

I might have a beat on a roller, though. I texted a buddy to see if one of his is for sale. I’ll let you know what I hear.
