AIM Smarty Cam

All-

I switched to the AIM Smarty cam this season, and for the most part, have been happy. I do still have some issues with it recording races.

1 weekend it recorded nothing. The next weekend it recorded everything. This past weekend it did not record the first race, and then only half of the 2nd race. We have not changed anything with the setup, so I’m not sure what’s happening.

Does anyone have experience with these to give me an idea of what might be happening?

We power the camera from the onboard starter battery, and have it connected to the Mychron 5 for data.

My understanding is the camera powers on when the engine fires or when the mychron is powered on. It doesn’t start recording until it reached a speed of 5mph.

I’ve had similar problems - frustrating. Make sure you have the latest software updates on both the camera and Mychron. From memory this was a recognised problem stemming from an earlier software update, but since “fixed” in a subsequent update. I’ll be testing this weekend.

That said, I do really like the camera and data overlay coordination (other than for the video quality, which in my view is shite, unless I’m missing a setting change somewhere).

Tom-

Thanks. I will look to update the software on both prior to next season.

As for the video quality, definitely doesn’t compare to most action cameras, but I am done dealing with those.

Software updates are pretty important and should be looked for every time you plan on using the camera. The hardware is the weak link. I keep a spare camera and a spare cable because getting video is a critical element for our program. I advise a spare cable at minimum. I also advise an external battery as the internal one is weak and needs to be charged throughout the day.

Any other questions feel free to ask. It’s a great bit of kit and the support from AIM is very good.

We use the external battery. We are done for the season, but I will make sure I update everything before next race season. The video is mostly for me. We do some coaching with it, but we are nearing the end of our participation in karting, and I want the videos to sit back and watch on the days I know I’ll miss karting!
