I have 5 acres of hard packed property and a tractor with a front end loader and box blade and can’t get it out of my head to make a small backyard track, possibly oval, possibly something with lefts and rights. The goal wouldn’t be to build a world class dirt course that is fit for a field of forty to compete on, it would be to just to provide me something to turn some laps on in a spare sprint kart when I’m not at the track.
Has anyone done this, and if so can you recommend it, or is it one of those bottomless pits of time and energy ideas that never felt like it paid off, lol? (and if it was worth it, is there any thing(s) worth knowing ahead of time)
It’s cool to have a track to yourself though. Worth noting that some townships can be sticklers, even for private use things. Depending what your city/county board is like, forgiveness might be easier than approval etc.
Keeping it in good shape, watering grooming etc is some work, but it can be kinda cathartic too.
Haha, I guess that’s the type of response I could have expected, but that does look like fun! And fortunately, we’re in a private area that isn’t subject to too many local ordinances (but I want to be a good neighbor in any case, of course).
I’m seriously asking - what does kart maintenance look for this type of use case? It seems like the bar would need to be lowered in terms of how I would/could normally expect to keep my kart. (grit is just another form of lubrication, right?)
What type of engine(s) have your run on your track?
I just raced there this last weekend, it was a blast. I’ve raced on one other backyard track, and although it wasn’t quite as nicely groomed as the Monsions, it was still fun.
