I think the “catch can” is being used as the fuel tank? The regular fuel tank’s not there and it seems there’s fuel line running down from the “catch can”.

Easily could have mounted the engine on the side! Just why?

I’ll bite… because center mounting the engine makes it slightly less unstable? Although that may be a reach on my part but logically a mid engined teeter totter will be less unstable than the traditional side mount which would exaggerate the instability on one side.
Fulcrum karting. A lifeguard chair for the races, maybe.
