Cheap timing solutions

Hello, I’ve been getting into karting for the past few months. Although I haven’t been able to get as much seat time as I wanted I feel like I’m not going to be able to make progress unless Im able to compare my performance between sessions.

As I’m still very new I can’t justify a 500 dollar mychron 5. Are there any cheaper alternatives for timing? Maybe some third party systems? Any help is much appreciated.

I have no idea if this is suitable but I was eyeballing these for my arrive and drive endeavors.

Used mychron 3 or 4 are other options

I would say a mychron 5 or Alfano 6 would be VERY good investments if you take the time learn how to analyze the data to see WHY you were faster or slower than another session.

This looks great thank you. I’m going to have to look into what kind of data you get out of it.

Right now I don’t know if it’s worth it as those new units are getting close to the price of my chassis :joy:. My driving isn’t consistent enough yet to really benefit from such detailed data. I’ll pick one up when I’m not running 4 feet off of my preferred line.

The mini thing seemed plenty powerful and was on sale I think. To James point, a used older 4 might be doable, but the mini is cheaper, I think.

Mini is 199 on sale. My thinking is that it’s likely great for lap timing. It’s probably also really useful for analyzing it, it seems to have many functionalities.

Heaps of exciting features to improve your driving like real-time result prediction, density altitude, bike lean angle, slope corrections, custom tracks, hill-climb mode, open-track mode, data comparison and more - see the full App description below.

If I could carry the transceiver thing on my body, it could be useful in my racing.

I’ll add a vote for the race box mini too. Great value for money and if you combine it with the race chrono app and a GoPro you can get video win overlays.

I just stuck mine to the floor tray using the included Velcro straps and just threw my phone in my pocket… But I like that bracket tanguy shared too. The only thing is that it will not have a stable G force read, but still it’s handy.

Racebox mini + an old phone with RaceChrono.
This will give you very precise lap- and sector times. It is easy to use and reliable.

Please mount the lap timer according to
FIA Karting Technical Drawing No. 1.2

I don’t think that TD applies to the races that Tanguy runs.

Thank you, do you have the pdf download by any chance? It says the page isn’t found.

Yeah I’m not having luck with any of the TD links today… Apparently they don’t “exit”

I tried waybackmachine but everything that was cached appears to be blank

I did find this in Scribd for the Technical Document … Not sure if the original document was more than one page… This seems like a fancy way of saying “device should not protrude from wheel rim for more than 20mm”

Hi all. I’m developing a lap timer for Android phones based on GPS. Anybody is interested in testing it (beta phase)?

@Gabe_Eats_Grapes, maybe you are interested?

How do you mount the phone on the steering wheel

Not needed. You can hear the times on a headphones. But anyway, you can use a mobile case like the ones that runners uses to hold the pohne in the arm. I saw people doing this with a bit of creativity and small hand made solutions.

I use one case like these and bluetooth headpones.
You can also print one with a 3d printer.
If you use an external GPS, like RaceBox, you can even keep the phone in the pocket

I’m also beginner on karting, and I realized that I was not able to focus on the track and watch the phone in the steering wheel at the same time… If you are a pro and you can do it all without lossing your foucs, maybe my app is not for you.

I developed the app based on my experience, so I would want to have more feedback to improve it.

Oh wow. That sounds dangerous. Some tracks dont allow this kinda thing…

It’s as dangerous as solutions that are in the posts above. You can also use them.

Regarding the tracks rules, you will be able to use it wherever the racebox + racechrono stuff is allowed. The setup is the same.

At the track where I train it’s allowed (AFAIK none of the track rules goes agains this). I hold the phone to the chasis using a phone case and a 3D printed holder. Nothing complicated and it’s holded tight enough to last the whole day.

Of course, I’m not talking about official races… but for training I do not see the problem.

Maybe you know something that we do not? It will be usefull for everyone who is thinking about cheap timing solutions if there’s something that can get us into trouble
