I was thinking that a slip over T fitting would be ideal here to take the stress, but that certainly adds more weld area as well.
Cheap crack check for at home is kerosene and baby powder. Soak (wet) the joint in kerosene for at least 5 minutes. Then using clean rags or paper towels wipe the joint free of kerosene. Clean it well. Apply the baby powder to the joint, covering it well but not caking it on. Wait about 5-7 minutes and any kerosene in a crack will weep out into the baby powder giving you an indication of any cracking in the joint.
