James, what does the map display exactly and how do we use it? What can we learn from this?

, but I think they are the locations of members that have commented based on their profile settings. i.e. You filled in your location information on your profile and set it to “public”.

There’s two maps.
One is members (Assuming they included it in their profile)
The other is topics by tagged location. About a year ago we made an update that when you create a new topic, the location would be set to the one in your profile by default.
I’ve always liked the idea of seeing who/what is near me (or what’s going on in a place I’m going to visit). It doesn’t deliver value in every topic of course, because not every topic is really location specific. But still, for events and questions on rules, series, tracks or looking for local support it can be useful.
