Extreme grip and stamina (GRX, E-town)

What a day.

Well if there was any doubt that a new kart track would have demand in central nj, today answered any such questions. GRX was swamped and it got a bit crazy. Cops were called a few times lol.

Basic gist was demand exceeded supply. David and the gang did their damndest and got as many folks out as they could but many went home dissatisfied. Not enough karts, system not dialed in, etc. teething pains. But jeez what a day.

I am really impressed with the track and the experience. It will race so very, very well. It’s magnificent and bonkers simultaneously. This has got to be the double black diamond of rental karting, lol.

I am not too worried about the chaos because this is the real deal in a world where that is going bye bye, replaced with corporate well oiled machines that have zero soul. Keith is a hero, imho. You go Keith! I am pretty sure there’s enough rabid karters to make this work thurs-sun. There’s just nothing else that comes close. It’s feral, a bit dangerous and awesome. Also Keith does not give a F and will run us in torrential rain,so long as there’s no lightning. Amazeballs.

A few things: master cylinder rebuild kits on their way. About 1/3 of these centurions have brakes that can’t make up their mind, corner to corner, whether they would like to bite or give this braking zone a pass. An interesting conundrum.

Secondly, he’s gonna run hard up front now instead of his usual mg reds. They are getting eaten alive by the extreme grip here. A very good call, imho, and will make the karts more neutral balanced. I bet we see a lot less hop with hard tires up front.

I am knackered but really pleased, once again, with my visit, ya gotta try this. And yes gas karts are a huge pain in the butt but they are so.much.more.awesome than the electrics. You need that low end crappiness to make racing work. You need to be punished for losing revs and rewarded for keeping them tight. You need to be able to have that run out of the corner and you need to feel the top end roping itself around you and your heart. I missed this, I just didn’t realize how much!

This place really doesn’t work for teenage boys who don’t think about consequences. It doesn’t work for folks with thin skins. The experience is ideal for folks who have some experience and are trying to be fast. It’s also perfectly fine for normal folks who want to see what it’s all about. But it’s not the baby pool and the lifeguards won’t save you. And you will be told to leave if you do dumb shit like race into the pits and play intentional bumper cars with the equipment. And no, you don’t get a refund.

GRX is badass and probably unique. It’s a thurs-Sunday gem that probably isn’t gonna work out in the long term, but man, we are so lucky to have this for as long as we get it. Caveat Emptor but in an oddly good way, a fitting way. It feels so very right and I struggle to articulate why. Just come and try and make your own conclusions. You may hate it, but, I think, if you love to race, it will feel like the kind place you have been looking for.

League is almost upon us and looks like we will manage the 20 racers we are shooting for.

Format will be something like practice/quali and two heat races. Since we have 20 racers we will do A and B groups of 10.

I set up a discord for getting this off the ground but Keith has hired someone to social media and web stuff so hopefully we will have a click and register/pay system soon.

We have all the Thursdays in Aug planned and could do a couple weeks into sept. We will see how this goes and decide whether we want to do the extra 3 races. Initial interest looks good. So long as it’s not a total shitshow, it should be a good league. We have a bunch of good drivers and one heck of a racy track, so, fingers crossed.

Ding! 20!

Dry

Aaaaand I’m already arguing and we ain’t even begun… David floated a format that I disagree mightily with. We shall see.

Well I can’t sleep. Off to Starbucks via Rebel Scum Road. Venti, anyone?

I go to my happy place…

And a cool little promo video David made with me as driver:

Looks like we gonna go with one long practice-quali and then a single 20-25 min heat race per split.

We are probably gonna do heaviest 10 one group, lightest 10 another… and then after the Stadium Challenge, Alec will bring his weights.

And in other news…

Saturday!

Jeez I have a full dance card:

GRX race one: Aug 1
6hrs Joisey: Aug 3
Stadium Challenge: Aug 11

I am very very glad I have been karting my butt off (literally) at GRX. Either I’ll permanently break from this or I will become stronk as Ox.

Race 1 went surprisingly well! Keith got the brakes sorted and a moist track provided the challenge!

We had about 20 turn out and we divided us up into heavy and light and had at it.

We did a 15 min practice with the last 5 being quali.

I won quali for light group with my buddy Alex Smith in 2nd. Unfortunately a work crisis necessitated me leaving before main race, so I was not able to see how the chips fell, ultimately.

The rest of the gang then subsequently enjoyed one 25 min main race. No names to report as I don’t know yet.

Big props to Keith for getting the kart brakes sorted and big props to David and the gang for making it work smoothly and well!

Little update on GRX and league stuff.

It’s gone quite well and the track has proven to be very popular. We also have been running the league successfully albeit in a rather fluid and casual way. I say this because we have tried a few different things, seeing what sticks.

Where we’ve ended up seems to work well:

5mins of quali. This then allows us to divide the field into 2-3 groups. If we get 20 or so we’ve done 3 groups of about 6-7 folks.

This allows us to select the best karts from quali to ensure that no one is stuck in a total dogshit kart. The best karts seem to vary weekly, depending upon what tragedies befall them in the general sessions. The hot kart of last week may become the dog of the current week. It do be like that.

From there we do two heat races.
The first is 10mins, the 2nd is 15mins.

The winners of the final heat race in Div B and C get to also do the final heat race of A and B, respectively. A little bonus, if you will, for being awesome.

There are no points or anything, as it’s pointless to do so. Each week is just its own thing. Bragging rights for the night.

The kart lottery effect is strong. The fleet is very small and the karts have been mangled a lot. This is why it’s kind of pointless to have a points based series. It’s basically luck of the draw.

Keith, however, has found us some new karts to broaden the fleet out, another 12 used centurions that will be added in January. This should help a lot as most of the karts have unique and individual turning and power plant characteristics. No two karts drive the same :joy:.

Despite the frustration of wonky karts, it’s still the best karting experience in the area, imho. There’s also precious little karting available on outdoor, gas karts. It’s really nice to have this and the track is unique and awesome.

It’s a fri-sun thing and subject to the needs of the drift series and other stuff like car shows, so it’s best to check website before coming. Also, pro tip, come early.

Oh, and we do have brakes now! The issue was with the centurions having some weird axle movement that would make it such that brakes went bye-bye. Fixed!

Here’s some footage from a lovely evening. In case you want to see what our layout looks and drives like:
