GY6 150 cc no spark

I am a novice to go kart repair… I do work on a lot of small engines for lawn and garden applications. A neighbor ask me to look at his Fox Carbide 1500 which has no spark.

What I am finding is that it apparently is a GY6 engine and there is a whole lot of the GY6 out there…made by multiple Chinese companies but all similar if no identical? I am asking not telling.

A few questions… I found some badly corroded electrical terminals and a partially melted terminal block. I cut the wires out of the black and attached individual male & female terminals to the wires…but still no spark… I pulled the flywheel be cause I was not sensing any magnetic pull on the exterior of the flywheel. Once I got it off it seems like the entire interior surface of the flywheel is magnetized.

Most of the small engines I work on the area where the magnet is placed is charged but not the entire flywheel. most of them the magnets are on the outside of the flywheel and maybe what I am experiencing is normal??? The stator is a 8 coil stator. If I replace it does it have to be with an 8 coil;? I see a lot more 6 coil stators but i assume they work with the flywheel and I would have to replace in kind with an 8 coil. Can anyone confirm that??

The one coil wrapped in tape looks like it may have overheated the tape looks like it cooked a little. Any troubleshooting tips that you could share would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Chuck. If this thing is running from a battery and the battery is not dead you can rule out the stator for now as it’s only a generator.

The magnetic pickup of course is the trigger, you’ll probably see a pulse on that of around 50v if you have an oscilloscope. This is triggered by he small magnet on the outside of the flywheel. The magnet around the inside is for the generator with the stator coils. Generally the more coils, the more current it’s able to provide. So if it’s running lights or something else and the battery voltage is low while it running, then more coils on the stator would help.

All that said, while I’m not super into just throwing parts at something… with the GY6 stuff being cheap, it might be worth replacing the whole lot as long as it seems there’s good connections? Sounds like the connections might be a bit seuss though.
