Helmet Camera - Brackets

I shoot everything with a Hero 10 and have learned some things over the last year.

The most common reason (for me) that my GoPro stops recording mid session is due to heat. I use to leave it on my kart all day and just change out the battery when needed. What I found is that sitting in the sun in the pits or on the grid, the camera can get pretty warm. When you then ask it to record in 4K 60fps, it heats up even more and shuts off due to high temp. Now I take it off the kart between sessions and only mount it right before I start a session. This has seemed to solve the issue so far.

The other reason it can shut off is due to excessive vibration. I mounted it once to the top of my LO206 motor near the fuel pump. It kept shutting off on me. Swapped it back to my ram mount off the left seat strut and did not have any issues the rest of the day.

Couple of tips regarding the mode: I keep it in fast shooting mode (or whatever they call it). Instead of turning on the GoPro with the side button and then hitting the record button, fast mode allows you to just hit the record button. The camera turns on and immediately starts recording. I’ve never had it change modes starting recordings like this. I have had it change when turning the camera on via the side button as if you accidently hit the button a second time while turning it on, it can change modes on you. Hard to tell with gloves on! I believe you can also lock the camera into a specific mode and preset so that might be something to try too.

Finally, I find the “Enduro” batteries to be FAR superior to the standard blue ones that come with the camera. The battery life is better and I feel like it deals with heat better. YMMV.

Hope that helps!

Yeppers! Heat is the problem! This got really bad with the 11 or 10 not sure. For enduros I’ll run with external battery for cooling reasons as well as capacity.

Interesting timing: The GoPro Hero 12 was just announced today. Sounds like better runtimes, higher temp thresholds and better stabilization tech!

And it supports bluetooth audio input! In helmet mic audio may be way easier now.

However, it removed GPS for some reason. So no more telemetry from the GoPro.

A bit of a follow up having used the 12 for a year or so…

Totes worth it. The loss of the GPS data allows for better battery life. My general experience with the GoPro telemetry was that it was inconsistent in terms of locking satellites, and was often corrupted/unuseable. I do not really miss it, but I did like the data overlays when they worked. I could consider using my mychron 5 if that becomes important again.

With the lens mod 2.0 the 12 is really great. Nice wide angle, high resolution, really nice 10-bit color, etc.

The 12 actually felt like a meaningful step forwards. The cameras evolved pretty fast from hero 7 to 12. The 12 is substantially more flexible, has giant sensor, better color, resolution, framerates etc. its easier to use 12 footage and reformat for shorts as well (going from 4k to 1:1 or 9:16.

I’m not sure what future brings but of all the GoPros I’ve had, the 12 is the standout. (Session 4, hero 5,6,7,9,12, max). Also, unlike the 8-11, I have not had any overheat brick events. The 12, while it runs hot, doesn’t seem to overheat like the recent gens.

I feel you but… I personally found that unless I was consistently using the cam, it was a crapshoot. Either the angle would be off, the settings incorrect, etc. it seems that with a consistent process, I have greater chance of good footage.

Actual camera fail is rare. Accidentally changing modes or tuning the camera off when on, etc, are the usual culprits. The cameras that did fail, failed consistently… one of my hero 9s bricks always but the other one never dies, for example.

This is what i did to my driver. A insta360 go 2 wrapped with velcro inside the helmet. But in race weekend they dont allow any sort of camera in or on the helmet and also on the gokart. Tried to clip it on the visor but cant hear a single noise. Just wind

Ha you beat cambox to the helmet 360 cam!

Cool idea!

With my 360 I had to mount on a unicorn to be able to have cool 360 views. When I had it close to helmet, the helmet would block view. Raising it up on the unicorn mount allows unobstructed views, (but you look like a crazy man).

My teammate used an insta360 go at out last round of racing, since out sanctioning body allows helmet-attached fitted cameras.

Fitted behind the visor there is an occasional reflection, depending on the lighting angle, but he did not find it overly intrusive to his vision.
Here is a short clip of some of the footage from that angle.

That looks great and works out super well 9x16
