Help learning to tune a carb

Hello,

I’m new here. Getting back into karting after being out for 20 years. I recently got a TM R2 shifter kart. Are there any resources you guys recommend to learn about tuning the carb? I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing. Just started the engine today and it would only rev to 10k and wouldn’t idle at all. I’m assuming it’s way too rich. Sweedtech said the EGT should be 1300, but everything I’ve read says 1200 is high. I was only seeing 400. It has a 150 main jet and I have no idea what other settings it has or how to even change the main jet.

There are lots of variables when tuning a KZ carb, and things like EGT targets can vary pretty widely depending on build parameters, sensor type, sensor location, etc.

If you search the forums you’ll find some good info regarding KZ jetting.

Did you purchase the engine from Swedetech? If so, call them to troubleshoot, as I’m sure they’d be happy to do so. Not sure where you’re located, but their target EGT numbers are going to be in Fahrenheit.

Main jet alone doesn’t give the full picture, as needle, clip position, atomizer, etc. can all affect carburetion. What type of fuel and oil are you running? Do you have a weather station to give you a read on atmospheric conditions?

Regarding the engine only revving to 10k, make sure the choke lever on the top of the carb is in the down position. And these engines aren’t designed to idle. You can use your right foot to keep it running.

There’s good high level information on understanding how the VHSH30 carbs work in this topic: Dell'Orto VHSB and VHSH30 carb help (Includes Manuals)

which jets do you have on the carb ?

There’s a jetting app on the playstore from jetlab.

It’s pretty good and will get you in the ballpark, it will give you 10 options and allows you to input plenty of varibles.

Up there with the best money I have spent on kz, especially at the start when figuring things out
