Hillard driver issue/need help

I have this 17 tooth driver I was trying to install into a clutch drum but couldn’t get the circlip to seat. Upon closer inspection, I realized the driver wasn’t fully seating but couldn’t figure out why. Well, even closer inspection it appears the grooves aren’t as fully machined. In the picture you can can see where I circled but this is in each groove. I don’t know where I got this driver but why is it like this?

Look closely at both sides of the teeth on the drum, too. Mine looked like the previous owner didn’t seat it right the first time, and that mangled things like that.

This is a new driver and the drums (I tried it on 2) work fine with the 15 and 16 tooth drivers I have. This on is machined differently and I don’t know why.

Is it one of those bully conversion drivers? I remember having an issue trying to throw one on with the stuff I had laying around years ago similar problems

That is a possibility but I wouldn’t have ordered that but it could have been filled incorrectly.

Nah, the conversion drivers look completely different. Looks like you just have a dud.

Hilliard quality control is pretty solid but there are some occasional issues. They’ve been really good about taking care of issues but they’ll likely only do it through your dealer. They barely tolerate contact with us dealers let alone retail customers…

Chiming in a bit late on this conversation, but I’ve purchased a couple Hilliard drivers that missed a machining step. one didn’t even have the little half-moon things machined into it to fit into the drum!
A quick call to the shop I bought it from, a photo texted/emailed to them with normal and ‘defective’ part side by side, and they mailed me a replacement in short order.

Thats good to know if not concerning about their QC. Unfortunately, I don’t remember and can’t find a receipt for this item.

Overall their QC is outstanding for clutch manufacturers. Probably second only to Tomar (Quartermaster) in aftermarket clutches in karting. And they stand behind their product.
