How to install variable timing ignition KZ

We had a thread here a while back on modifications for open regulation KZ classes. I have a TM R2 that I drive for fun and decided to try the variable timing ignition recommend in that thread.

PVL Ignition

It didn’t come with any directions at all for installation. I have a dial indicator for the piston and researched how to install a fixed timing ignition. It’s unclear where the timing should be set for this one though. Does anyone have any experience installing these or know where to find some directions? I searched and couldn’t find much.

/edit, might be something here: Installation Instructions – PVL-Ignitions

I don’t have any answers but I’m curious how this is programmed too?
Did you get a CD with it? There might be documentation on there:

My kit didn’t come with a CD. I think it’s just preprogrammed with one curve. I’m just not sure where exactly it should be set from top dead center.

I’m just having a 125 Open Superkart being built for me using a new TM R2 with a variable digital ignition (and for the moment just using a stock KR KZ chassis rather than a specialised long circuit chassis such as an Anderson - that may happen later).

The engine setup also uses a 39 mm Dellorto, not the standard 30 mm. Much more fuel is pumped in this configuration (think main jet 220 or so) and the digital ignition produces a big spark to burn it.

At this stage I expect to collect it on 30 Nov (first test drive on 1 December - hope I don’t blow it up: I’ll do a separate post). I’ll send some photos of the ignition setup and once I understand the control configuration, will add some words.

Any updates on your R2 with digital ignition and a Dellorto 39 mm ??

Hi Bill

I’ve posted elsewhere under the Unlimited topic, but in short the “build” took miles longer than it should have (and I was not happy). The first run-in drive (at Broadford) was a fail as the clutch plates were (re)installed in the wrong order and it jammed open. I didn’t even get out of the pit garage. I’ve since run it at a sprint track (Geelong) but first long track (road circuit) run is Friday next week at The Bend (South Australia), the best circuit (International) in Australia. It’s a long drive for me and I’ll be livid if I blow it up. We’ll see.

After my Geelong track run, the piston still looks brand new - not a mark on it. Massive fuel flow with a 220 main.

I haven’t touched the variable advance curve. No doubt I’ll get lots of free advice from the guys on track. Right now I just want to hopefully stay with the back of the field (in our Open 125 class).

Photos below.

I’ll post more on Friday with hopefully a smile on the dial. Should get four plus practice sessions. Then qualifying and racing starting Saturday and finishing Sunday. Not ideal prep with a barely run in engine and chassis (albeit first world problem).

If you’ve never raced at The Bend and get a chance, grab it. The run of high speed corners through T8-T10 are just insane.

The photo below is with the crew when last at The Bend.
