Went to Orlando today to practice in the KZ, didn’t realize there would be so many people there already for the skusa winter tour race next weekend. There were only a couple other shifter drivers, one masters and one pro. In the morning they had 3 groups, kids, slow, fast. Consequently I was out there with like 40 ka100 and x30’s all driving like they could respawn.
It was a mixture of fun and a couple “pucker moments” ripping through them on the KZ, the highlight was tailing a couple 3-4 kart groups of front runners and watching how fast they are in those things, its just bonkers! Such precision.
It was cool to kind pick my way around and watch it all from the best possible vantage. I took a video of the final session I will post later, I am not sure I condone them letting us out with that many single speed karts (mainly due to the difference in race line), but it certainly was an experience.
No one was “in the way”. If anything, I was the odd duck causing issues because I can’t carry the same min corner speed as a 350 lb kart on the same tires. I did get a couple taps on my rear bumper at apex after making a pass on entry due to that issue, but nothing serious. I paid my fee for the day though, and they put us all out there together, so I tried to make the best of it!
Nice clear looking day out there. Besides the obvious advantage the KZ has in acceleration and top speed, it’s crazy how much you closed on them in the braking zones. I would almost say it was more than in the acceleration out of the corners in many cases.
