Just registered for the skusa k1 race today.
Tri-C Karters will be running at K1 starting on Sept 8,9, 2024. https://www.tri-ckarters.org/
That’s good news! I’m going to try and sign up for arrive and drive with Empire Karts for ka:)
Well hopefully they got the permit sorted then for gas karts.
You could also drive for us - give Billy or Matt a call
Hopefully that quiets the “California hippie liberals aren’t allowing gas engines” myth.
I stumbled upon the circuit’s site this morning and it’s fairly interesting. What absolutely blew my mind was the electric kart they had for sale. $11k didn’t seem crazy, then I noticed it didn’t include the $8k battery. THEN I noticed it didn’t include the $1.2k charger.
I’m all for electric karts and think they make sense in a lot of ways, but no way am I paying $20k for a kart anytime soon. The argument that you save on fuel and maintenance over the life of the Kart definitely makes sense and I do think it’s valid, but that upfront investment is still insane.
That’s not a myth. They are not allowing good asphalt either, so every track (K1 included) has its challenges. But it’s a discussion for another day, nothing you can’t solve with more money.
Also like any other racing product, electrics are not different. As soon as you start competing with a platform, engine selection, batteries, controllers they will all go through the same process ICE engines go through to squeeze that little bit of competitive edge to work around parity, it will just be different and skillsets will be very specialized and in a different wheelhouse…so 20k is just the starting point. To me, issues are different and more related to the overall infrastructure and value proposition once you scale it…and I have one foot on electric, one on ICE for both work and personal so I’m not really biased either way
A few posts up someone said “California isn’t kidding with not allowed anyone run 2-stroke karts.”
That’s a wide, sweeping statement which might lead some to believe no one is racing 2 stroke karts in California anymore (I’ve literally heard people say this when I was visiting the east coast recently) which clearly is just not true.
I guess I just don’t understand the anger and vitriol around cleaning up our sport, as long as it’s done in manageable and achievable ways. The leaded gas thing…in kid karts no less…is just insane to me. I admit I’m relatively new to karting and the regulations around it, but I was in off road motorcycling from 10-35…and that ongoing battle is not dissimilar.
Not sure why you’re so fired up over this.
Of course, existing tracks are grandfathered in (for now), but it must be some serious hoops to jump through to get 2-stroke karts allowed now at a new build. When my buddies were there to check the place out not even gas canisters were allowed on site.
I don’t think people are as angry about electric karts being a thing as you think they are. I don’t care either way as long as I can race. Hell, I’ve been trying to weasel my way into trying the Rotax E20 kart.
My point still stands they would rather not allow it.
I lived in So Cal in the late 80s… The pollution was so bad you could literally see the smog looking down a football field. You could stand in the end zone, and look at the goal posts on the other end of the field…and SEE the smog it was so thick. That degree of pollution literally kills people. I don’t get it either. The policies of CARB and the various local air quality management districts have dramatically improved our living environment.
From the video, it looks flat in a KA100 and for sure, there will be a shifter revival in So Cal.
Well…Friday is practice day. Anyone going? Looks like the races will be well attended. KA100 Sr sold out, and there are so many entries over all that there is a tire shortage. They had to push KA100 to use the Evinco Red. Not enough Blues to go around…
And no updates of any kind on their Facebook page.
I get the idea that they are not big on promoting races that are not their own, with their e-karts.
Kinda weird since it is one of the premiere Regional series hosted by I would say the main National series in the US.
KA100 Jr’s are turning lap times 12s a lap faster than their e-karts. I do not think they want to promote something that makes their pet product, the foundation of their business model, look third rate. They still have a vision of what this is going to become, and it is not going to become that. It is going to become something else. They are going to fight it for a while, but reality will eventually sink in.
I don’t think they are selling their e-karts as a sprint kart replacement. More of an enthusiast-level product?
I haven’t followed their karts or marketing at all, I have just been waiting for it to be open for racing.
Kind of refreshing to see a reaction from a local resident that does not seem to know much about kart racing…
