Kart Republic Body Work

I understand, it was just to highlight that the solutions presented aren’t just randomly put together and to confirm that everyone worked with a scientific approach in mind.

As I said way back, without sharing this “scientific approach”, a generic driver cannot take advantage of it. Aero is a package deal and everything (especially driver size) has to work together. If the OEM won’t share what driver size, seat position, helmet, etc the fairing was optimized for, how will I know if it is optimized for me?

I firmly stand in this camp as well. I’m also curious to see what their testing procedure entailed. If they test one of these panels when the track is green and another at optimal temperature/conditions later in the day, that testing data is essentially useless for obvious reasons.
I find it very hard to believe that, outside of a wind tunnel, this thing reduces more drag than it creates.

Their testing showed the weren’t selling enough body panels, so the made a redesign and sold it as “more aerodynamic” and more expensive than the previous version.

… you buy it and find out. That’s the whole point.

Regardless of the actual size, the point of the scoop is that its directing airflow. What they used as their assumptions for airflow direction is a black-box, and that’s a problem. You have to assume that it works for you, or like Alan mentioned, buy it and find out.

Problem is, all we’ll find out is that our wallets are some obscene amount of money lighter

Anecdotally, I have the current “fishmouth” ducting to the driver “overhead.”

While roadracing at daytona, my nose was victim of an “early braker” and it shifted the airflow to my face. The whole rest of the race, I had to listen to what sounded like a Briggs at 7k rpm at volume 11, in addition to the usual kart noises. It was actually louder than most of the other noises. So, turbulent flow, I’m pretty sure. I’m not sure how much the duct was hurting or helping me.

But the noise was so annoying I’ve vowed to do whatever it takes to not have that duct misalign again.

I have that same bodywork, and the idea of ducting up-and-over goes against everything I learned from racing cars. It seems like KR has also drawn this same conclusion with the new bodywork that diverts some laterally. Usually (as in always) you are better off diverting around rather than over because it creates less drag when the flow converges on the backside. I have a tool to determine drag from kart data, so I keep wanting to see what happens when I slap tape over the inlet, but just the power data I gather has enough noise in it to make test results inconclusive. I usually only have about a 1/2 hp certainty which is plenty for gearing and keeping an eye on engine health but not nearly enough accuracy picking out drag effects at 55 mph

May be interesting to some of the folks in here DPE (makers of Arrow karts) just posted the above with a stated amount of drag reduction on the newer KG nassau and nosecone

would it be worth taping up inlets/outlets of the kg508 nassau to better the flow?

I’m sorta’ curious if the “inlet” was on the underside to evacuate the already low-pressure air if that would help reduce turbulent flow around th footwell. In roadracing the speeds are higher, so aero is more obvious. I’ll try an A/B taped/Untaped test if I get the chance in 2 weeks…

Ted, you are a pretty creative guy. I’m thinking taped and untaped in the same session. Start out with it taped up and rip it off mid way through the session. Straightaway speed or something obvious could be used in road racing to see if there is a measurable difference.

Ruh Roh…another battleground?

This gentleman has made many videos on this subject (aero changes). I haven’t watched yet because I’m arrive and drive. Does he make good points?

I am disputing his conclusions. Also he used my graphic without crediting me  That’s been fixed now

Glad he fixed that…and I dispute his conclusions also. These are areas we don’t need to be dabbling in.

We’ve seen it tested earlier by other KR teams, but it seems like KR Motorsport will run it officially from this weekend’s WSK Super Master Series final @ Franciacorta.

We will run it as well this weekend , we’ll give some feedback.
