LO206 Exhaust Gasket

I was doing some work and could see the exhaust appeared to be leaking a little. My last engine had the same. Does anyone do anything special to get the gasket to seal?

Used high temp silicone on 1 motor that was problematic. Otherwise, made sure the header bolts stayed torqued to spec and the support bolts were all snug to prevent shaking of the exhaust.

Keep an eye on the fasteners. There’s also a copper gasket available that seemed to help mine.

The gasket crushes over time, effectively loosening the bolts

I wonder if MLS (Multi Layered Steel) would be a better option… Not sure on legality there.

Copper gasket with copper gasket spray, and studs instead of bolts.

The copper gasket is necessary. Standard part.

Never run the gasket in mine

What do you use for locking? Metal locknuts?

These stick up above the stud for the safety wire.

Ah, forgot those exist.

I do like the idea of studs instead of bolts. What is the diameter and pitch?

M6 x 1.0. I just ordered the proper briggs ones that came with threadlocker on one end, but im sure regular set screws would work too.

I use silicon, check it often for leaks (pre race prep) I also just use bolts with safety wire (Note, I only took a photo of the time I messed up the safety wire as the left one is backwards)

How do you check for leaks? Cold? Hot? Thank you

After I do leakdown, I just rotate so exhaust valve is open and I cap the end and at low pressure just use soappy water around exhaust header… no bubbles and your good to go.

During the race day, I just look to see if there is some exhaust marks coming from flange.
