Modern airbox on the old mod honda

Been thinking about racing my old 2002 mod honda kart in the club series at Jax. I always ran a K&N air filter on it, but the rules there require an airbox. I put a KG Nitro on it, I am curious how the engine will respond. I know from some experiments in the past that the result of a change like this aren’t always inuitive. Thoughts?

From my Stock Honda days there were times when we were mandated to run an airbox due to noise regulations. Typically the airbox would jet a size or two leaner than the K&N type filter. In the cases where we ran the Righetti Active (awkward to mount for sure) it actually increased overrev as well.

You may also experiment with the boot in the airbox. We always saw better performance from the K&N models that had the longer boot. If you remove the boot from the KG airbox that you have there, you should be able to reverse it and increase the intake length (although it will also be angled).

Thanks for the reply!

My boot for this box is symmetric, but I did see that there is an angled one available which I will probably get. If the box works ok I will probably get one just to get the box in a flatter position with the openings aimed more forward.

Side note: in 2001 when Jax started their noise restrictions, the SKUSA rules didn’t say anything about how the noise was reduced. 99% of the paddock adapted the CIK airbox that was available at the time, and experienced a noticeable power reduction. My dad bought a 1 gallon bucket. He made a intake muffler by cutting a hole in the bottom that the k&n air filter neck could fit thought, and lined the inside of the bucket with foam. The bucket protruded about 2 inches past the end of the filter, and really knocked the sound down. These passed tech and to our surprise, actually increased power. We never verified it on the dyno, but you could see it in the accel trace on the long straight there (and top speed), and I went a couple tenths quicker. My hypothesis was that it calmed the air down around the filter, leading to decreased resistance on the incoming charge. I trounced the field (regional race) and our airbox was promptly banned.

I recall one of the officials stating that “the home depot bucket look isn’t going to grow the sport”
