MyChron 6 Discussion - Comparison, reviews etc

Have there been any updates or information released on how to configure and use Can2? I’m interested in integrating a can capable third party sensor with several output variables. Analog out/in is not practical and the Can2 feature is very attractive. But from what I have found, information is scarce on exactly how this capability is utilized.

There is no user configuration available for CAN2 on the M6.

Don’t dismiss how fast the turn around can be. I have sent it in next day on Monday and had it back that week

Thanks for the quick reply. That’s unfortunate, I can swear 3rd party sensors was mentioned at release, but maybe that was wishful thinking on my part. I suppose it is a capability available if you step up to the next level of gauge but the hardware is undoubtedly built into the M6. It’s a shame to not be able to access the capability for the karting cummunity. Maybe a compromise would be to set aside some number of Can messages with fixed IDs and formatting for 3rd party integration. Again maybe wishful thinking on my part.

Being able to tap into Can would be a hobbiest dream.

I am equally frustrated. I do know it has at least hit beta testing

AiM will bend over backwards to fix things for you. If you are worried about time, call before sending your MyChron in. They will tell you how fast you can get it back. They can overnight things to make you ready.

Has anyone gotten external sensors to work with Mychron 6 via the Mychron Expansion strip? I’m at a loss. I plugged an AIM throttle/brake position sensor and an AIM brake pressure sensor into one, plugged that into a 12V battery, and connected to the Mychron 6, but I can’t find any way to configure the sensors (on the screen or in RS3) and the Mychron 6 doesn’t seem to recognize it. The Mychron is charging itself thru the strip, but the strip’s LED isn’t lit. Any ideas?

Is the firmware in the M6 up to date? The expansion was not in the original fw. I will share the menu options in a bit when I’m at a gauge.

Yes, I forgot to mention the firmware is the most recent version (02.44.09), as is the RS3 software. Any help is appreciated. Weird that Aim removed the Expansion setup (for external sensors) from the Mychron. Seems like they REALLY don’t want users running their external sensors.

p.s. Nice to see another longtime Rennlister hereabouts!

I forgot to get the menus on the M6. I will try tomorrow, but always feel free to email [email protected] and I’ll answer. I was doing it last week with an ACC3, so I know it works.

Here are the menu options. First into the menu, then into the wrench for system setup.

Scroll over to the expansion settings.

Then you can set what is on each channel and calibrate it if necessary.

If you don’t have the setup screen for the expansion, then it’s not being recognized. Providing the FW is up to date (remember to transmit to the device, not just download), then it would not have power or have an issue.

Thanks Matt! I didn’t realize the Expansion settings only appears when an Expansion device is attached. Which means my Expansion strip must be just dead, despite it providing power to the Mychron. I’ll email you offline about getting the ACC3 bits & pieces.

I am having an interesting issue where if my MyChron 6 battery is below maybe 60%, half the screen will shut off/freeze or the whole thing will freeze after 1-2 laps. Has anyone else seen this issue?

Edit to add: The issue appears to be similar to this one ( New Mychron 5s problems ) .So it is probably independent of the battery status.

First, make sure the firmware is up to date. There has been at least 1 that deals with this.

Second, make sure the RPM lead and the temp lead are not run directly with each other. This will create screen problems from the EMI. I had the exact same problem that was fixed by running the cable separated a little bit.

Thanks for the quick reply Matt!

I am going to try both of those! After doing some more digging (https://support.aimshop.com/faq/systems/mychron-series/pdf/Interference1.pdf) I am 99% sure that EMI is the cause of my issues. I definitely have the cable bundled up with a temp lead AND its wrapped around the spark plug wire wayyyy too many times.

The cables together is the problem. Once you move them a bit apart, you will be good.

@TrailBrakeMatt doing his thing at the OVKA Trade Show & Swap Meet today :flexed_biceps:

So we are now in Gen 6? Anyone still got a gen1?

I’ve used everything from gen2 to 5 and I’m sure I’ll use the 6 at some point.

I’ve seen them on vintage karts, still running.
