N00b karter - Rental Tips and Tricks

Internet here in Australia is pretty crap. So I am uploading my quickest lap now and will upload race 1 overnight.

Here is my quickest lap of 41.08

Nice lap! You have a good line here and if I am not mistaken, you gap up on the guy ahead of you. I really like how quiet you are keeping the tires. I’d expect to see you just hanging on, but as far as I can tell, you seem to be pretty on top of the kart here.
It looks like this track, particularly with all the camber/banking, is gonna turn into a very flowing thing. It just looks like there’s an ideal line that you can squeeze speed out of by getting all the zoom gravity will give you.

Are you conscious, at this point, of where you want to emphasize early throttle to maximize speed down the few straight bits?

A thought; coming out of 6 through 7 into 8-10. 10-13 looks like an opportunity to gain on folks that overcook this sector into 8.

I was definitely catching the guy in front. In a lap or two I was right on his tail. Unfortunately, a mistake from me let him get away.
The map you have there is the old layout, here is the current map:

There were 4 corners that clicked in race 2 that were the main reason of the quicker times. T2 there is a join in the concrete that upsets the kart, I was lifting as a reaction to it. I started lifting just before it and then as soon as I felt the bump I would get back onto the power. T7 was the same with a join and back on the power early, I also started taking a wider approach coming into it.
The other two turns were T11 & T12 which helped me set up T13 which is super important for the main straight.

EDIT: I should add that I realised I have no idea how to drive defensively. That is something I’m going to have to work on.

It is a narrow track. Where does the passing usually get done?

I don’t see anything in the video that screams “fix me”. You aren’t overdoing it, you are on line, you seem to be pretty in control of throttle and that kart remains pretty well under you.

I think your regular driving has served you well as you start racing karts. I imagine, over time, you are going to refine that line and where you squeeze into throttle. There’s a few places where you push a bit harder and squeak a bit going into turn but nothing dramatic.

Post races and stuff. If I can see anything that inspires a comment, I’ll try to communicate it. I am interested to see how fluid you get here over time. This really is a momentum and flow kind of track and you seem to inherently “get it”. Really nice first laps.

Let me ask you this, how can we best help you? What would be useful to you? Want me to try to pick apart your laps or just high level observations?

A couple thoughts on passing. When you catch the guy in front of you the tough thing is to convince yourself to back up. You need to back off the driver in front of you just enough that you can run your speed through the corner and catch them just as you come out of the corner. Also the long straight is the obvious passing point. Sometimes the switchbacks leading up to it the suprise place. People will often give up a set of corners prior to a straight to maximize the last corner before straight. Sometimes taking advantage of the corners they gave up can work. When it does it is fun.

Thanks @Todd_Martin. When I am good enough to be in the middle of the pack I’ll definitely need some pointers.

@Bimodal_Rocket I’ve had a bit of trouble uploading the races. I seem to have it sorted so here is race 1:

Anything you feel I can improve on I am happy to hear it :+1:t2:

3:17 Maybe take the inside and force the issue at turn 1? It looks to me that you had the pace to get past him and he left an opening on the right. I think you could have gotten alongside.

Its OK to get right on their bumper and its ok to touch a bit. Sorta, “Hey I’m here.”

This can A) rattle them and B) if you are right on their bumper and they make a mistake, you are right there to jump on it.

Notice how the faster guy who passed you parked himself on the bumper of the guy ahead of you? Do that. And then, as @Todd_Martin said, don’t push into the corner. Be looking for really strong runs out of the corners. Back off a touch to really push through where you can make it happen.

I think since this track is so tight, you are gonna have to line up and leap on small mistakes without much room to move around in.

Your pace was substantially better than the guy ahead of you.

I do not know if the pack came back to you or you came to the pack in the middle there. Either way you started gapping up in turn 1? complex of 2nd lap. It looks like you did better there and also in final sequence.

Hell of a first race. You drove well. 6 months you are battling in front. You aren’t overdiving to the extent I’d expect for your first time trying to get past people. This will get smoother and faster the more you do it.

I decided to just have as clean of a first event as possible. So, I hesitated a bit on the start as to not get involved into turn 1 on my first lap and just worked on my own pace. I really didn’t expect to be gaining on anyone, I think the group came back to me a bit, but I was also quicker than that guy ahead. I really do need to gain some confidence with passing in a race setting. I was the only entrant at their first event, so was properly a little more passive than I would be normally. And to be honest wasn’t entirely trusting of the other drivers yet.

Well it was 3 races before I got the nerve to try and pass. Once I did I was like “Ooh, l like!”.
Then I was trying to pass too much! :grinning:

Scary at first but totally rewarding.

I did notice the hesitation at the start. No need for that next time. Get around that guy!

Oh, by the way, I am really jealous they let you guys wear shorts and t-shirts. I am guessing that’s because it gets hot in your neck of the woods?

I would assume it would be because of the heat. Required equipment is: Helmet (+balaclava if using their’s), Neck brace (they do supply) and closed-in shoes.

An update on my placings: On track I finished Race 1: 12/13, Race 2: 11/12 and Race 3: 12/12. However, due to after race decisions my official results are Race 1: 10/13, Race 2: 8/12 and Race 3: 10/12.

Jeez. Wonder what went on up front!

One guy got completely turned around (you’ll see that in race 2), another incident of not leaving racing room. Not sure of what else.

A bit of a write up, video and pictures from the organisers:

Wow! That’s brilliant way to promote the race series. That’s the first I’ve seen of a rental kart website doing that. The photos, video and writing are all well done. I really liked the race commentary. It really makes the rental races special if you are on YouTube like that. The pressure!

I also have to say from watching the video, what a unique set up they have there. Its grippy concrete? Ive never seen a track outside of indoor electric rental designed to have no runoff like that. It’s really neat.

I must admit the no runoff and tire walls were quite intimidating my first session. I don’t really notice them anymore.
The concrete is not polished and is a bit rough. Here in Queensland we have a number of Highways/Motorways made out of the same concrete. Then the black paint is textured as well, although become very slippery when wet.

Looks like you had a challenging start and had to play catch up. My impression is you were a bit rough compared to previous initially, maybe because you were trying to catch up from start? However, it looks like you reigned it in.

At the end of the start finish straight I see that you lift a bit to get round the corner onto the bit that sets up for upcoming big turn. Do you know if the faster folks are taking that flat somehow? Speaking of which, I like how you took it at 3:30 roughly. Really, well balanced, nice throttle through apex. V nice timing.

What’s your take on this one? How did it feel, what were you thinking about, trying to do etc?

How did the laptimes compare to your previous 41.x?

Also did I mention how much I love the wrecked race Utes that decorate the final complex?

Finally, I thought more about the question you posed in @Stacker’s thread regarding where to look when you don’t have anywhere to look (obscured exit). So, it makes sense you ask that given how the bulk of this track involves linking turns in a tunnel, basically.

I guess what I’m trying to communicate is that how you look at where you are going influences wether you are on top of the kart or behind it (reactive).

If you stare at the space directly ahead of you, you will get behind. Imagine you are wearing VR goggles and your view is a circle that dramatically reduces your peripheral vision. Sort of like looking at the track through a periscope.

If you have any hope of pulling off a crazy Ivan, you gonna need to turn that periscope unless you have the turn stored in muscle memory.

Obviously, if you aren’t aware of what’s coming next, it’s gonna hard to not be a bit late to turn in. It takes about a 1/10th for a signal to get from brain to hands, I think.

So, in your case, I sorta drove along on my sim last night and pretended. The walls are low enough that you can see ahead somewhat. More importantly, it occurs to me that you are basically going from wall to wall, - left, right, left.

It seems to me you can apply the same thinking I articulated before but where you can’t see an exit, you can see the opposite wall of the track stretching away.

And, you do know what direction the upcoming turn is. So, don’t focus on the wall ahead. Note your apex point, then start looking for the opposite wall to open up.

I think you’ll find that you apex just fine, without looking directly at it as you clip, and that you’ll be driving through the turns better. If you give yourself tons of advance notice, your turns will be less reactive.

It’s an aside, but worth maybe thinking about a bit. But, no matter what, keep your eyes moving.

Literally a crack will do. No one will be able to tell and its better to see.

Whoa. I will respond after I read all the posts . Can´t wait to see the racing!

I just referenced your thread. It was not a call to action. :joy:

Normally I do take that corner flat out. However, between race 1 and race 2 there was a small sprinkling of rain and we were advised by staff to lift for that corner. It also rained slightly between race 2 and race 3, and again we were instructed to lift, but, part way through race 3 I realised I could still take it flat out and started to do so. Regarding the rough start, again i hesitated on purpose, I won’t be doing this next race. also, hopefully I won’t be starting from the back next time
Fastest lap in race 2 was a 41.171 on lap 5.
