N00b karter - Rental Tips and Tricks

It is a concrete track painted black. The white is where the paint has been worn away.

Did my first practice session yesterday. Not super happy with how I went. I will upload a video of it soon.
Today was meant to be karting academy/ driver training. Unfortunately, it was called off due to weather.
Tomorrow is my first race and am pretty nervous, especially after missing the training today, as I hoped to get my eye in a bit today.

Don’t sweat it too much! You know the track. What’s got you nervous? Traffic or just nerves?

Bit of both I guess. There will be some properly fast guys there and I don’t want to get in the way. But, also just nerves in general too. Not sure what to expect.

Nerves I can’t help ya with :joy:

However, drive your line. Forget about the faster guys. I am guessing you guys race clean in your league. If so, the best thing you can do is simply let the faster dudes get by you. Don’t block em if your intent is to let em by. If you feel it’s necessary, point someone by. If you try to let someone by by moving offline, you are likely putting yourself where they least expect it.

Have you done any races before or just track days?

I’ve kind of forgotten what kind of things I wish I knew when I was new to racing. What can we answer for you?

Also, you might be in a crashy league like mine. If so, this should be fun. Prepare for battle.

Good Luck tomorrow. It will be a lot of fun. They always are.

Experience is just trackdays. Had a few battles as part of this, but, nothing like real racing.
Thanks for all the advice :+1:t2:
Here is a link to the vid of my practice session:

That’s a really cool POV. Is that a chest cam?

Best description would be chin cam.

That is very unfortunate not to be able to practice a bit to feel the kart better. But I think you will find your pace easily in the race, your driving looks pretty good, you know the lines. Don´t think much about the drivers behind, it is their job to overtake you and to do that safely, not yours. You just stick to your line and if you notice that someone is much faster than just take a wider line in a corner and let them by. It is a tricky and narrow track, that is for sure.

I like the lap starting at 6:45. Not sure if it was one of the fastest but it looked good. Few things I noticed. T1 you can go a bit wider on the exit or just make a small lift so you don´t oversteer like that. Was that oversteer at all? It looked like it by the correction on the wheel at least. Following corners seem ok, although you do nice job on the wheel but all the bumps, ups and downs on the track really unsettle the kart so you need to find a way to reduce that sliding as much as possible. On the 7:23 there is some oversteer that is present on many laps I think. You can make a small lift there as well, I think it can help you smooth out the line and to not lose speed.

Don´t worry, go out there, be constant, don´t overdrive the kart and be safe. Of course have fun! Will you be filming the race as well? What time does race start? Night or day?

Thanks Pavle. That lap was one of the quicker ones, but not the quickest. T1 you kinda go into a 4 wheel slide, or just on the edge of it. It does seem like I over did it on that lap. You are correct about it being bumpy. It’s a concrete track and the joins and really upset the kart. Particularly into T2 and T7. I tried having my seat more forward to what I am used to, I felt it loosened up the rear a bit too much for my liking. And it cause me to accidentally press the brake a few times (engine is limited when brake is pressed).
I will definitely will be filming all 3 sprint races. Should be fun. The races start at 8am tomorrow.

Alright, give it all you got, have fun! Really looking forward to see a sprint race on such a narrow track!

I’m officiating at a race today and will take a look tonight. Have fun!

Even after years of serious IKF competition, I would have the jitters before a race, especially if I was on the front row. I can remember standing there on the grid, before race, looking around to see if I could find someone else to take over for me. lol. lining up for the race, waiting for the checkered flag, it all went away.

First sprint event done! Came last overall, but, had tonnes of fun. Beat my PB by .8!

Woot!
First race survived! And faster.

So what did ya think? Anything surprise you? As expected or different than expected?

Racing was very clean. Cleaner than I expected and the was some big penalties for spinning people out. 1st race I didn’t come last! Only because someone got black flagged.
I was pretty bummed out after the practice session on Friday. I was .5 slower than my PB and didn’t feel like I was improving any. Sometime during race 2 I had something clicked for a few of the corners and I hit a rhythm that got me a New PB of 41.08 (down from 41.9). Videos will be up soon :+1:t2:
Have booked the karting academy/driver training for next Saturday. Hoping to get into the 40.xx then.

Wow. That is very technical (if that’s the correct term). You are gonna get good at linking turns!
I cant wait to see race footage. Its narrow and looks like passes will be interesting. It’s probably not trivial to get past people in such a narrow and relentlessly twisty track.

Am I seeing correctly that every turn is slightly banked?

There definitely is some banking, I haven’t noticed it on all the turns. Over taking doesn’t happen often as far as I can tell.

Nice to hear all the positive stuff! Your position doesn’t matter, you improved! Waiting for the footage :slightly_smiling_face:
