New guy Getting Started

Hi all. I’m a new kart driver. I’m a former pro motorcycle racer, but I haven’t been a track since 1979. Today was my first day in a kart. I did pretty well, and it was lot of f fun. I’m still setup for road racing, but I might switch to karts. I know absolutely nothing about karts, but I’m sure there’s a lot of knowledge here. Thanks.

Hey Doug, welcome to the world of karting. Like you I raced superbikes (not pro) in the 80’s. I was way more uncomfortable driving fast into corners in a kart that I ever had on a bike. Something to do with g forces, and low to the ground I suspect and not knowing how karts react.

I’m still a super noob, but karting is become much more fun the more I understand how to drive a kart.

If you’re a technical person you will love karts. They are so tweakable and easy to work on. It’s still hard for me to understand how on earth 5mm narrower wheels can make any difference but experience drivers can tell in the handleing.

I’d encourage you to continue enjoying karting.

I see the DFW reference in your name. I assume you are in the DFW area??? If so, you have 3 nice track options nearby.
North Texas Karters - Denton TX. Hands down the best value. Club owned and operated. Can practice anytime with club dues. No trackside shop or support outside of teams that attend race days. Active club racing schedule.
KartMoto - Cresson TX. Fun flowy track. Club dues are a touch higher than NTK. Some trackside shop support. Nothing much for club racing.
Dallas Karting Complex - Caddo Mills TX. Technical track. Most expensive of all the facilities. Best track side shop support of the 3. Weak club racing, but they are putting a renewed focus on growing it. Great facility. Did I mention not inexpensive???

If you don’t mind driving a bit and want to experience an old school club vibe, there is Heart of Texas Kart Club in Waco TX. They have a tight old school track. It is the oldest club in the state, going back to the 50s. Great people.
