Noise from Engine Ride Rear - LO206 - Need Suggestions

New to LO206. I run a 32 MM Praga Chassis with 50 MM Axle and VP Engines LO206. I know chassis is not ideal for such a low HP engine, but it suffices until I upgrade it.

I was running the Jacksonville Fla track the other day. I brought a Neighbor with me. I was running okay, decent lap times, no issues. When he was running at a much slower pace he was complaining of noises from engine/sprocket area. I then went out and ran slow and I too heard and felt very distinctive grinding/binding from the sprocket/clutch/chain area only in reduced speed (50%) left hand turns only. So seems to be triggered when loading up the engine side rear wheel. Not sure if only happening at lower RPM/Speed or just more noticeable at lower speed.

Track is 3 hrs away so tough to test. I’ve not taken the kart yet, but a quick visual shows no shifting of any components (Axle, sprocket carrier, engine). Everything is still aligned properly. I don’t believe it is the bearing, but you can feel and hear the binding almost like chain is not engaging with teeth. Can’t replicate on stand. There are no metal shavings and no scarring on inside of sprocket guard. Chain as a little loose, but was told better loose the tight. Was lubed after each session and never looked like it came off. Oil level. 14OZ is fine.

As part of regular off season maintenance I’ll strip her down. I’ll soak and lube bearings. While I don’t anticipate it being the cause I may install a new Hilliard Flame Roller Bearing and bushing (Or maybe even a whole new clutch). Definitely replace chain, and rear sprocket. I’ll also check frame for cracks by having friend bounce on it, and visually check when I pull the engine mount.

Also noticed I have that Bell sound from Clutch Area that seems to be common with larger drivers/karts running the Hilliard Flame.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Happy new year…

Anytime I have had issues like you described the axle grub screws were loose enough to allow the axle to shift and the brakes are hanging up. OR.. It’s possible the clutch bolt is loose and allowing the drum to move. Also check to make sure the motor mount and bolts are in good condition and tight.

I will check all the above when I break it down in next couple days….

Pretty sure it is not the axle grub screws. No shift in axle or any axle mounted components.

Clutch bolt loose and allowing the drum to move. – I will check when I pull the engine. Clutch drum had a little end play as per Hilliard (About 1 credit card Width).

Motor mount and bolts are in good condition and tight. – I will check when I pull the engine.

Thanks everyone for the input. Pulled the engine off today… Chassis is not cracked (Was kind of looking for an excuse for a new one). Can’t find any issues… Clutch looked good, nothing shifted, loose, etc. Sprocket looked good, only chain was a little loose but no marks on sprocket protector. Since I have it apart, I’ll change axle bearings, clutch bearing, bushing, rear 67 Sprocket.
