So, among my life’s travels, I’ve noticed considerable overlap in interests with fellow racers. Like me, many of them also appreciate anything having to do with flight, flying, sailing, horses, downhill skiing, etc.
I’ve done all those, and am currently modifying a kart engine for use on a powered hang-glider project.
So, I’m curious… what other ‘extreme’ interests do my fellow kart loungers have?
I’m also interested in 'backpack helicopters." A guy in Austria, Franz Shoefmann, made a coaxial setup with originally an ICA 100cc engine, then switched to a Rotax Max…there’s no margin for safety, but it looks great fun!
Living in the northeast, I can enjoy winter activities like skiing and snowboarding and then mountain bike in the summer. I mountain bike trail ride usually twice a week but I also like to visit ski mountains for lift access downhill riding.
This is what my old KT-100 is probably going to be doing…
The keen eye will note that this is likely a Haase FSA with rotary valve and carby on other side, mag side driver to a centrifugal clutch to wheel, and a HOT pipe right under the seat, for proper heat conduction to the brass jewels required.
The Dutch excel at these homemade minibike / pocketbike racers. Mine will be a little more tame…but only a little.
Yep, i do all 3 of those with a moto trials thrown in here and there. I actually don’t do MX but i do a fair amount of hard enduro, trail ride. I ride adventure too, 1200gs and 450exc. Love moto!
Downhill ski…not much lately, friend group dropped out. Used to Scuba years ago. Flew general aviation years ago, after solo, which was a great experience, i got very bored. Took some sail plane-glider lessons and then hang glider. Dropped air hobbies all together. Now i’m here, hoping to scratch the Karting itch. I want to supplement moto some, also wanting to be able to bang out laps during the week when work is slow or something cancels. Can’t do that by yourself on moto in the woods.
This is actually why I’m creating the powered hang-glider – don’t have to spend hours going to a mountain somewhere…or wait for perfect conditions. PGs are portable but have a very narrow operational envelope.
I may get into FPV drones though, as that’s a lot of the fun with minimal risk.
Well I raced mx as a teenager then all through my twenties I raced 250 national kart in the UK.
I moved to California in 1990 and started racing dirt bikes again. I then raced Supermoto for about 10 years which caused me more injuries than any other sport i’ve done. I’ve also done some track riding on sport bikes. I was also doing downhill mountain biking at the time which I still do to this day. I acquired a couple of Rotax Max karts a couple of years ago so I drive them occasionally. Now at age 64 I am back racing motocross. Never give up
