With the OTK cadet/rookie chassis, I want to switch from the N to the hard A axle, but it doesn’t have a keyway for 4-strokes. So, I’ve been looking at the PKT axles as an alternative, and I figure this must be a common problem out there. What are you all using for OTK cadet axles?
PKT sells 21, D25, 30, D39 hardness (guessing this is basically steel thickness). I don’t know how these correspond to the OTK scale but I’m looking for something close to the H/A axle. I just worry that D39 might be too far. Anyone have experience with this?
Drilling a couple holes works fine for the 50mm, relatively thin-walled axles in full-size karts, but not a chance it’ll work for the 30mm cadet axles that are thicker-walled combined with being a tight circumference, leaving nothing for the key to sit in. The only option for the OTK cadets is to either have a keyway machined or to switch to a different brand of axle.
It’s really not that big of a deal. Literally did 2 last week. Take your time, trim the key down if necessary. Drill and angle grinder and it will take you half hour if you take your time
While I have a drill and angle grinder, all I’m going to do is destroy a $200 axle…
PKT says they recommend the 30 or D39. Anyone have experience with either? The D- is a different material from what I understand, but don’t know if it’s better or worse. I’m aiming for something in the H/A range on the 30mm axle.
I don’t trust myself to get it perfectly flat, so I just do enough to get drill started. Then if the key is too tall when I am done, I’ll take the height off the key itself.
I have ground a flat spot on some but to be honest it was to hard to get it perfect and it drove me nuts if it wasn’t. The last few I just drilled 2 holes and used a key with a lower height.
