The editor, Jake was really into him. Much as I found Jake difficult, and extreme in his opinions, he sure did have some interesting interests!
The art director that served before me, Brian Brannon, was frontman for JFA, aka Jodie Foster’s Army. Possibly the best band name and logo ever. Paisley JFA logo. Fun story and cool guy I used to surf with.

JFA (Jodie Foster’s Army) is an American hardcore punk band formed in 1981, with roots in Arizonaand in Southern Californiaskateboard culture. The original members include Brian Brannon (vocals), Don “Redondo” Pendleton (guitar), Michael Cornelius (bass), and Mike “Bam-Bam” Sversvold (drums). Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls also played bass for a time. The band was pivotal in the development of the skate punk and Skate Rock scenes. Over the years, the lineup has included many bass players and drummers but the core of Brannon and Redondo has remained constant.
Well, I guess this leads us to Winston Smith art:
Winston Smith (born May 27, 1952) is an American artist, illustrator, and cover designer who primarily uses the medium of collage. He is probably best known for the artwork he has produced for the American punk rock group Dead Kennedys. He also designed the Motéma Music logo.
Smith is particularly known for his collaborations with Jello Biafra (former Dead Kennedys frontman) and Alternative Tentacles, for whom he has done numerous covers, inserts, advertisements, flyers, and logos. He is responsible for the famous Alternative Tentacles logo as well as the well-known Dead Kennedys logo and six of their record covers. One of his compositions, God Told Me to Skin You Alive, was used as the cover of Green Day’s album Insomniac.
Speaking of Dead Kennedys, Brian needed some people to make noises on a song called clown party so I was in a recording studio with Brian and Jello Biafra. I have zero musical talent or even ability so the extent of my contribution was to shout “CLOWN PARTY” into the mic when Brian signaled.
Thrasher may have been a career dead end but man it was interesting.
