@Stamatis125 # You need to listen to these guys…

ANGINE DE POITRINE (Chest Cold)

this is “Microtonal” music. They are Canadian, pals who grew up playing together. Very unusual.

also…

Ah yes… The The… some of you are too old, some too young, but for a time this was very fresh and original. Great lyrics.

indeed!

And yes that is Jools Holland doing the piano part at the end of uncertain smile!Hearing Jools boogie woogie made me think of this;

Piano riff! I bet it’s Jools as well. Earlier and Analog. Not to say that they are similar, they are not, just a coincidence.

The The

The The are an English rock band from London, formed in 1979 by singer-songwriter Matt Johnson, the only constant member, and often the sole member.

The The achieved critical acclaim and commercial success in the UK, with 15 chart singles, seven reaching the top 40. Their most successful studio album, Infected (1986), spent 30 weeks on the chart. They followed this with the top-ten studio albums Mind Bomb (1989) and Dusk (1993).[1]

The The operated as a solo project from 1982 to 1987, though albums featured contributions from musicians such as Jools Holland, JG Thirlwell and Neneh Cherry. It became a full band from 1988 to 2002 and featured the guitarist Johnny Marr until 1994. The The went on hiatus from 2002 to 2017, and released their first studio album in 24 years, Ensoulment, in 2024.

Squeeze

Squeeze are an English rock band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the new wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording in the 1980s, 1990s and 2010s. In the UK, their singles “Cool for Cats”, “Up the Junction”, and “Labelled with Love” were top-ten chart hits. Though not as commercially successful in the United States, Squeeze had American hits with “Tempted”, “Black Coffee in Bed”, and “Hourglass”,[1] and were considered a part of the Second British Invasion.[2]

In the vast majority of their material, lyrics are written by Chris Difford and music by Glenn Tilbrook, who are guitarists and vocalists in the band. The duo were hailed as “the heirs to Lennon and McCartney’s throne” during the band’s initial popularity in the late 1970s.[3] The group formed in Deptford, London, in 1974,[4] and first broke up in 1982. Squeeze then reformed in 1985, and disbanded again in 1999.[5] The band were also noted as a launchpad for the successful careers of their keyboard players, Jools Holland and Paul Carrack.

So yes that the same pianist!

My fave The The song, perfect lyrics for moody artsy teens:

Lyrics

Well you didn’t wake up this morning 'cause you didn’t go to bed
You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red
The calendar on your wall was ticking the days off
You’ve been reading some old letters
You smile and think how much you’ve changed
All the money in the world couldn’t buy back those days

You pull back the curtains
And the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying
Across a clear blue sky
This is the day, your life will surely change
This is the day, when things fall into place

You could have done anything, if you wanted
And all your friends and family think that you’re lucky
But the side of you they’ll never seeIs when you’re left alone with your memories
That hold your life together, like glue

You pull back the curtains
And the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying
Across a clear blue sky
This is the day, your life will surely change
This is the day, when things fall into place

This is the day (This is the day)
Your life will surely change
This is the day (This is the day)
Your life will surely change

Late at night in Paris, the kids would get to the clubs before mass transit would shut down and stay the night in the club, leaving in the am. I remember seeing some pretty incredible goth couples back on the metro platform waiting the late trains. She reminds me of a lady I saw a long time ago.

Why is Sweden such a pop music powerhouse?

Sweden is a pop music powerhouse due to its heavily subsidized municipal music schools, a cultural environment saturated with English, and a knack for exporting music to survive a small domestic market. The legacy of mega-acts like ABBA and hitmakers like Max Martin has built a highly successful production infrastructure. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Sweden dominates the global pop charts because of a unique combination of structural, educational, and cultural factors: [1, 2, 3]

  • Accessible Music Education: Sweden’s famed welfare state provides heavily subsidized, often free municipal music schools (kommunala musikskolan). A massive percentage of Swedish children receive early, formal music training.

  • The Export Imperative: With a small domestic population, Swedish musicians and producers have always had to look globally to make a living, driving a highly international and adaptable mindset.

  • English Proficiency & Media Habits: Because Sweden does not dub foreign movies or TV shows, citizens are exposed to English from a very young age, making it easier to write globally appealing lyrics.

  • The “Melodifestivalen” Ecosystem: The highly competitive televised selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest acts as an incubator, pitting top Swedish songwriters against each other to write the catchiest possible hooks.

  • The Max Martin Effect: Legendary producer Max Martin created a collaborative, algorithm-like approach to songwriting at Cheiron Studios in the 1990s. He paved the way for a pipeline of Swedish producers (like Shellback) who write and produce a staggering percentage of American Billboard hits.[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
