Debating buying a 206 to mount on my chassis that normally has a KA100 on it. There seems to be almost no downsides, just extra seat time and fun racing. But want to make sure there isn’t some unforeseen obstacle in the way before I buy one. Is it going to be a headache switching them out every couple of weekends? Not looking to be competitive in 206, just to enjoy driving for a little cheaper.
Con: you go slower
Actual con, swapping the drivetrain could get old real quick
Just make sure your axle has a key way for inboard drive… like a shifter… I think most do now, but just in case….
i have a standard OTK axle from a 2021 chassis. not sure what to look for on it
how long does that take? isn’t it just swapping the sprocket holder thing
You’ll have to pull the axle halfway out to move the sprocket carrier since it’s inboard, meaning the Briggs clutch and drive sprocket face towards the seat. As for the axle, all you need to make sure of is that your axle has spot to put a key to the left of the two bearings on the right side of the kart, since that’s where your carrier will go. Also will likely have a handful of setup changes, I think it’s pretty common for LO206 to use less caster, narrower front and rear track widths, also sometimes the harder rear tires call for 6" rear wheels compared to the 7" ones for KA, depending on what your local track runs. Ultimately nothing that is an overly long or difficult process individually, just the whole thing might get a little old overall after a few swaps, in a “first world problems” kind of way.
If your axle has a keyway inboard and you are feeling lazy\hacky you can just leave that carrier on…
Like James said I might just leave the KA sprocket carrier on, and just add one for the 206. I’m probably not going to set it up for a 206 since I don’t run 206. Just for fun days where I don’t feel like dealing with the KA or if I’m at my monthly budget limit.
This comes up every now and then and I always so go for it. A couple little “tough” things will get you when swapping back and forth, but overall it is very easy.
- You will need an inboard sprocket carrier for the 206 (covered above)
- Dont forget which fuel you have in the tank. If possible, I would have 2 different fuel tanks or label very well. I would hate to stick my 2 stroke on non-mixed 4 cycle gas.
Everything else is super minimal. Have fun!
Awesome, good news, thanks!
I would agree with a different tank and lines as well.
You might only want the mychron for lap times and maybe hook up the coil pickup. Personally, I would get a second wire and leave it attached to the 206.
run the same style throttle cable as your 206, not the separating type.
Your KA exhaust bracket can stay on
I find the the driving style is a little different so the changeover might cause some issues on track as you recalibrate your driving. But that’s part of the fun!
Why not just use a Kt100 instead?
I don’t think it’s worth it. By the time you find a good KT, refresh it and get it on there you might as well redirect your funds to an engine that has a resale value and better quality parts.
Isn’t that pretty redundant with a KA100?
Just need a shifter axle, motor mount, and throttle cable. Possible a different length chain.
