I purchased this 02? Briel shifter kart with the plans of turning it into a backyard track kart. I’m new to karts and also have a LTO kart that has a splined steering wheel shaft while this one does not. The clutch lever is closer to the top of the wheel and I don’t like the placement and was hoping to put it around 9 O’clock but can’t do that due to the shaft only have one bolt hole. I know I have seen pictures/videos of karts with the steering wheel placement that I want, and I searched a bit online but it’s hard when I have minimal knowledge on what I’m looking for so was hoping someone here could help me out.
First off, Welcome! That’s a cool looking kart. Do you happen to have any pics of what you are shooting for?
CRG and Righetti Ridolfi make a clutch lever that is independent of the steering wheel hub. You can clock it however you like.
Thanks! Not really anything specific as far as pictures, but gunna get a LTO tire setup for it with treaded tires and swapping to American rims so I can change them out between my 2 karts if needed. Other than that kinda just changing some small things here and there as needed. Took off the side bumpers and probably gunna make some shorter wedge sides or something for it but nothing too crazy.
Perfect. I will check them out, thank you!
Hi
I’ve gone through the exercise of changing clutch lever. My KZ is used only for long track so clutch may be used once or twice during a session.
Don’t forget also that the path of the clutch cable has to be considered. My cable passed through or close to some of the brackets in that area. I didn’t take into account the position of the cable when I turned the steering wheel, so when I turned on full lock the clutch cable went taught and partially engaged clutch, which eventually burnt out clutch plates
Are those 7.5" wheels/ tires all the way around?
Thank you, I will definitely take that into account! At the moment it goes right through the center brackets for the fairing so hoping to have enough slack. Worst case scenario I will have to lose the fairing and then should have enough for sure. What brand clutch lever did you go with?
8.5 rears, 7 fronts. Not staying that way but on it as a roller/to see if I could get a little more height. Going with a true LTO tire setup once I get the track done.
I converted to hydraulic
Looking at the Righetti clutch handle, wanting to put a new steering wheel hub on as well so I don’t have the extra distance to the clutch handle. I was looking at an angled mount but it looks like it will put the steering wheel too close to the shifter, anyone have this problem?
That’s why most people clock it to around 10:30-11
That’s why they put clutch handle at 10:30/11? My shifter is in a fixed position, so clutch placement on the steering shaft shouldn’t be an issue either. But with an angled wheel hub it brings the bottom in, closer to the shifter arm.
I had to order a new ignition cover as the person I got it from didn’t torque or locktite the flywheel nut and it came off after 2 laps around the yard. That came in and got it on, and then got my rear radiator shield ordered along with the adjustable clutch lever, new radiator bushings, a new cdi mount, and a new fuel pump mount. Need to order a short steering wheel hub next
I misread your post when I responded last. Ignore me.
Can you use a longer linkage and move the shifter away a bit?
o man … those hondas cr on a kart is a beauty , im always dream for an engine like those . they got everything !
Stamatis, do you guys not see the Honda engine for shifter over there? That’s interesting because it was probably the most common here (I think because it was a bike engine and had lots of parts anvailability and was cheap ish).
No , in Europe we can only see them on the honda cr 125 dirt bikes , we never had that opportunity. No races ever was made for that . It’s the reason I watching again and again the doc become one … has a lot of Hondas inside that movie .
I had some cr dirt bikes in the past as a rider and loved them. So much reliability. Bulletproof engine .
