I ordered a new clutch for my sons go kart. The clutch sproket and drive sproket are now different sizes and the chain chain is a mismatch. How do I know the size sproket on a clutch that will match the drive sproket?
We need more info. What engine is this? Are you saying the two sprockets are different pitch and the chain won’t roll?
Yes thats correct. Predator 212 cc motor
I assume you either had a 35 pitch and got a 219 or vice versa as those are the main two options for 4cycle karts. To look at it there is no marking other than the number of teeth, so you have to be aware when you buy/order. Depending on the clutch you can change just the driver gear. Do you have a picture of what you have?
I took a picture of it. Im trying to figure out how to upload the picture to this site
Hit the little button with the up arrow in the bottom right corner of your reply. Or simply copy and paste the photo here and it will auto upload.
But yeah sounds like you have a combination of 35 and 219 sprockets as Bob said.
It would appear that the clutch is a 35 pitch, however the sprocket is either worn or is some other pitch. Notice the profile of the teeth. To me, it looks like a 219 pitch sprocket. Does the chain have any markings on it?
No markings. New chain came with clutch. Old chain fits sproket and old clutch
Thoughts on how to fix this issue?
Measure distance between the chain links on the old chain to determine
the pitch.
With racing karts the options are more straightforward. With your hobby kart it might take some trial and error. You are going to need matching chain pitch, basically the profile of the teeth. They must match. If you don’t know what the sprocket is I would suggest a new sprocket that matches the pitch and chain of the clutch that is new. Hopefully, you know what that is. You may find what you need here:
219 chain has pitch (pin to pin center) of about 7.8mm. 35 has about 9.5. What size is your original chain?
