Just bought my first kart and preparing it to get it to the track for the first time. It’s a rotax max evo, but I noticed the carb is dellorto VHSB 34 QS. My understanding is that it’s from pre-evo engine. Should I change tha carb to XS or will I be fine running current one?

you can run it yes . but there is some advances and dis advandances . check the link below to study them .
Thanks @Stamatis125 that’s a lot of details for someone new to this. One more thing - since this article focuses on pre-evo carb: I’ve talked to rotax max challenge rep in poland and he told me that I should be fine with my carb with evo engine as long as the venturi insert has 12.5 stamped on it. Also my carb has 172 main jet wile rotax app recommends 128. Spark plug and exhaust look like it was running rich. Should I go with smaller main jet?

yep . go leaner on main jet ,
but if you dont use a sensor on your exhaust to know your gas exhaust temperature .. go leaner small numbers each time to avoid been too lean and damage your engine .
