Rotax Starter Not Engaging

My Rotax starter doesn’t seem to want to engage. Last time I started it I spun the axle and then it engaged but it won’t even do that now. Any ideas?

Is the battery fully charged? Maybe the starter is not spinning fast enough.

I’d second the battery idea. Make sure that sucker is well-charged.

Yeah sounds like you might be getting voltage drop once the battery is loaded. Once that happens the starter gear will retract. Do you have a multimeter to check the battery voltage while it is running.

Looks like your clutch might be dragging a little possibly. But for sure that starter is not staying engaged.

Battery is new and fully charged :+1:

Reminds me of my X30 starter. It’s a good idea to have a manual starter handy. I remember hearing Jerry (wrench) mumble about stators and brushes.

I think you hit the nail on the head! Battery showed as being fully charged but wouldn’t turn it over fast enough. I connected up my battery charger to the kart battery with the 50amp start mode on and it turns over perfectly!

Yep 70% of the time that’s the issue. Battery shows a good voltage with no load on it, but once loaded the voltage sinks.

Glad you got it running.
