Been having a metric ton of fun last couple of days with Live for Speed. Noticed a few bad habits in my IRL driving, basically irratic inputs and a tendency to “dive” into the turns.
So set my G27 to max force (it’s not a lot), picked the formula V8 on my favorite street course and went to town with the highest possible steering ratio to make to more like a kart.
Maybe. It doesn’t seem to downgrade much between output for DaVinci and what is shown on YouTube. Main issue is from recorded footage to output from DaVinci. I’ve messed with every compression and nitrate settings with no luck. Timeline scrubbing has also been a big issue. I have to set playback to 1/4 resolution or it just stutters and falls on its face. I’ve got a pretty potent computer and this shouldn’t be an issue.
Also I’ve just found way better tutorials on editing footage, color grading, and rendering with Premiere. Could be wrong, but it seems to have the market share and what most people are familiar with.
I’ve gone backwards in terms of video production. I prefer now to just use a lossless thing to stick footage together or cut it, and then slap it up there raw. It looks best.
It’s a bummer not getting to do titles and stuff like the widgets though.
A little progress on my way back, and again the same laptime.
Here’s two laps, a day or two apart, that are again, identically, my current fastest. The 2nd one was from tonight. It is fascinating how many identical laps I am getting on this short track.
8/21
8/23
There’s a glitch where the “win” animation takes over and you barely can see the laptime flash, or, maybe, not at all. I thought I saw it say 18.051. It’s hard to find a clear frame in the video, but the picture below supports it. The splits are very close and the tire is shown just about to cross line with timer at 18.017.
Also, as we were talking about hubs… notice how the right rear is 1 psi higher than the other tires. The tires are staggered but using the lowest inflation number as start point. There is no way for me to lower pressure on right rear, so I’d need to change metal I think. Left to its own devices, the right side will be 3psi higher and overheats. Tire comes in at several points.
I think playseat would work just fine with small dd. I think I’ve seen some posts of folks doing that. I used to use a clubsport 2.5 on the playseat which was pretty large and heavy. The 20nm and up are huge tho compared to the tiny 8nm.
I really love my little dd. What I got that made a huge difference in terms of the experience was transitioning from my modded playseat challenge to an 80/20 rig. The playseat was great but the aluminum profile rigidity makes a difference.
I’m guessing the 20nm is big though and definitely would want a stronger rig.
I had an Accuforce DD base (which I believe is significantly larger/heavier, and maybe stronger than the DD1) on a Playseat for a while. It was not optimal, but it was definitely workable. I like the wheel force on the lighter side, so I never felt like the steering force resistance was going to rip the Playseat apart or anything.
You can always turn down the force on a DD base, but you can never turn up the ‘resolution’ on a non-DD base.
That’s great to know. Did the Playseat move around/wobble at higher forces (around 10-12Nm, which is probably what I’ll be running it at)?
That’s really the main reason I want to get a DD, I tried one a while ago and it was night and day compared to my belt-drive Clubsport 2.5. It felt super realistic.
I also run a Clubsport 2.5 on the Playseat, it works well enough and I can imagine it would work for a CSL DD or similar.
I wish I could get an 80/20 rig but my tiny apartment doesn’t allow that unfortunately. I am sure it would feel a lot better though, I made a pedal tray from 40x40 extrusions and it was far more rigid than the Playseat’s stock pedal tray. I suppose it the same effect on the entire rig.
By the time I was done with my playseat, a rig made more sense. I had modified the pedal plate and with the clubsport 2.5, I’d have some 2-wheeler moments.
The relatively low cost of the base simlab was attractive and I got a junkyard chair.
The footprint is somewhat larger but it’s totally worth it.
I have also noticed that they (simlab) have made a DD wheelstand. That perhaps also could be modded.
Evolution (minus the original setup wheelstand pro and thrustmaster tx):
Nice setup! My setup is currently like your second one (with the Playseat in front of the TV) because there’s nowhere else I could put the setup unless I sleep on the floor.
The wheelstand is interesting, but it also creates the problem of needing a separate seat. Maybe a separate car seat on an aluminium profile base with lockable casters so I can move it away when I’m not using it could work? Since I have a seat already, that wouldn’t cost more than €350-400 for the entire thing (wheelstand + seat base) and might be worth looking into.
That’s a great idea! The wheelstand with the seat mount is a decent alternative but it looks like it takes up a lot of space, so stabilising the Playseat (even if that means I will be losing foldability) is a better idea.
Those Etsy mods are exactly what I had in mind, something to hold together the folding parts.
You can buy a seat and slider. Automotive junkyards, Craigslist, etc.
I paid 250 (high price) for mine since the focus st was the only semi cool car they had that day. But, if you aren’t too picky, I’m sure it can be done for 100.
I have a pretty nice seat already (a Sparco racing seat from a car shop selling cheap used parts - probably the most unnecessary impulse buy I’ve ever made in hopes of using it for a future car build) which I suppose could be used with the seat mount. The problem is moving it away after I’m done, which doesn’t look easy with the wheelstand/seat mount setup.
Updated the title to Sim Racing Megatopic as it’s been a while (Three years) since it was KK challenge 2.0 and splitting it into separate topics would take a long time…
That said, it’s totally OK (and encouraged) to use this category: Other Motorsports Incl Sim Racing for sim racing questions and discussion. It’s definitely one of the more active topics for conversation which speaks to our desire for continual improvement.
