The car in iRacing has so much power it’s nearly impossible to drive. No matter the stagger you put into it it always feels like you’re in the slick at all times. Even with a 10-20% track usage. You stab the throttle and it spins almost instantly. To me it’s very twitchy with the steering…and in reality you can get the RR to dig in and hammer down off the corner, and the car doesn’t turn in real life as easy. It’s almost twice as slow as a wing car as the wing provides downforce and the stagger provides the turning capabilty. The wingless and Formula Vee are 2 cars I refuse to drive right now.

The wing cars are exceptional especially when you dial in the force feedback right. irFFB for me is a life changer, maybe I should try it on the wingless. The midgets are spot on and probably the best dirt car to drive.

I’ve raced a few times this week at daytona in trucks and xfinity. Out of the few races i’ve done I’ve rode around the back and have been caught up in other stuff. 25 and 30 lap races and everyone wants to push and win in the first 10 laps. facepalm There goes my SR and IR, after escaping Lucas Oil Raceway pretty unscathed the week before.

Good notes. I love the midget but I’m not that good in it and I don’t understand the setup theory at all. I wanted to try the non-wing sprint but I’ll probably stay away.

I ran a Sim Lab Production race the other night at the Roval and qualified P9 (I was the 12 car), but definitely had pace for P6 or 7 maybe. I tapped the wall coming to green and knocked the rear toe out so I was about a second off my ultimate pace in qualifying.

Race was really fun. We had a pack of about 4 cars battling for P5-P9 the whole race, and the gaps were ebbing and flowing. I ended up 7th after a race-long battle with one guy. I was being pretty aggressive on defense because I roasted my front tires in the middle part of the race trying to hang with a faster guy, but the dude I was racing against was from somewhere in Latin America so I knew he would be cool with me throwing a couple borderline chop blocks and aggressive passes. And indeed, he gave me a “good race man!” after the checkered flag. The Roval breeds carnage, so I was happy to move up a few spots, show good pace, gain a nice chunk of iRating, and to escape with a total of 1x after cutting the last chicane a bit hard one time. That track in GT-style cars is a blast. So many curbs to leap over.

Myles,
Thanks for the perspective. It does answer some of the questions I was asking myself, such as “who would be insane enough to actually try to race these?”. It is good to know that the real life drivers aren’t experiencing this level of danger, that it’s a sim related issue.

I really wasn’t joking when I said the wingless 410 on short oval is the most dangerous thing I have driven. It is utterly unforgiving and killed me virtually almost instantly. At half speed. I didn’t make it to the 2nd turn.

It does seem that way but I am getting the hang of it and can run a race now (let’s say 50+ laps) without crashing, at good pace.

The key appears to be understanding that going flat has to be done with great care and you must have progressive, rising throttle.

You have to get to 80% before you can stomp the last 20. And even then, you had better be pointing correctly with wheels straight because if not, you will spin a driven tire, at full chuff, and zing low side into the pit wall.

But the experience of learning this car and how to get it really moving is gobsmacking. It is so challenging and weird, but in all the right ways, except for the dying part.

It’s the perfect “double black diamond” sim car. It’s utterly brutal, will not put up with any crap, forces you to be precise and careful. It’s basically a momentum machine crossed with a top fuel drag racer. It’s utterly bonkers.

I will load up the winged version. I drove this car in the past and I do not recall it being like the paved version. It was certainly powerful, but it wasn’t as critical on inputs. I am curious to see how it is now that I am competent at the no wing one.

But the grip keeps me coming back even though I am alone out there, with no one else seeming to want to play.

It’s hard to explain how compelling it is. It produces legitimate moments of joy and amazement. It’s unlike anything I have experienced and I want to master this, badly.

Oh btw in USF2000 oval I would typically show a 4.99 SR. I’ve only been on one race and my SR is now 3 or so. Learning this car is very crashy and maybe TT is not the place to do so!

Are we talking about the non-wing dirt sprint or the pavement sprint car?

Paved oval 410 with no wing on half mile ovals.

I was actually gonna see tonight if it’s possible to practice with the winged on paved so I could compare.

I have driven the dirt oval 410 and it was not a similar experience. Much less challenging. (Still bonkers, tho).

Give the 410 non-wing dirt sprint a whirl and see if it’s as lethal, as Myles says it is.

The winged sprints have so much downforce that they don’t snap, but you have to be uber smooth and get up on the cushion.

I haven’t driven the non-wing dirt sprint. Without a wing you need to have the ass out so much more.

Oh yes, yes you do. But it’s all beautiful slip angle and feels like silk. Until you slightly overdo it.

Every once in a while l will throw in some legitimate drifts and wow is that fun.

Is the pavement sprint car free?

Negative ghostrider. You must pay for this abuse.

I haven’t driven the wingless in a while, and all my problems could be the tire model, and my expectations of what a wingless does

I know the tire model vastly improved the midget. But not sure if the wingless was changed.

The asphalt sprint calms down a little if you set the steering to 16:1 and your offset to +8-10 it’s somewhat manageable

Man Drives Car, Far

I wanted to see how many laps I could do without crashing. I went into a practice session with the intent of driving until the tires blew up, or I crashed.

I drove at good pace and had to adapt to the tires as they came off. It had a few moments, but overall, not too difficult to keep it on the pavement.

As you lose grip, you get later and later to full, coming out of the turns. Also, the top end lateral kick is much worse as the tires come off. You have to be very careful about opening up the last 10%.

What I had forgotten about is fuel. Even in practice, fuel load is a thing. So, instead of driving the tires to their final form, I ran out of gas. So, one tank of fuel appears to be 116 laps at New Smyrna.

Qualified 4th in the GT4 race at Hockenheim. Spun myself halfway through the first lap, ended up behind the slower class and had to pass them all. Got through them in 5 laps, then passed a few GT4s and ended 9th. Annoying mistake after running really well and never having an issue in that corner all in practice or qualifying.

Just did a Sim Production race in the MX-5 at the Roval, qualified 11th, ended 6th after getting up to 4th for a minute. Annoyed to take a 4x while gridding because the car in front slammed on the brakes right in front of me. Another 4x later for someone trying to bump and run on me in the chicane. Only lost .11 SR though because I had 1x the rest of the rest for a minor cut in the final chicane. Fun race otherwise, I was defending my balls off and felt like I was doing a good job holding back faster cars without contact or being too dirty.

At the end someone PM’d me “uspks best series”, was it one of you guys? The username was clearly not a real name and was definitely NSFW. :joy:

@AaronT were you in the GT4 race or practice or something? I thought I heard you say my name but my chat volume is super low.

Wasn’t me, I’m currently in the actual Charlotte to pick up a car my wife bought.

I’m gonna assume the start situation hasn’t gotten any better this week then.

It was not me on my Hotkartaction smurf account, sorry. Maybe its one of your kart buddies.

You use chat? I cannot imagine what that is like. I have always assumed the worst.

It’s usually just the rantings of lunatics… so I keep it off during races. But sometimes it can be nice if someone says good race or wants to discuss at the end.

But yeah usually I keep it off. People who talk constantly during the race are mentally unstable in my mind.

I had my first attempt at PC based online racing with the Driven By Diversity cup on Assetto Corsa Competizione.

I ran okay in the official practice running 12th out 35. But come qualifying I only got one clean lap right at the end, qualifying somewhere in the mid 20s. It was about this point I realised my computer might not handle it.

In the race got caught up in someone else’s accident and started making my way back through the field but the computer kept on glitching when I got close to people, eventually culminating in a bit of pit worthy damage. Pitted and somehow fitted the wrong brake pads, then spent 4 laps with pitstops trying to work out what I did wrong. Then when I figured it out and got back out 4 laps down my computer crashed the whole thing.

Also turned out I picked a poor car for a beginner but it is what it is lol.

So now vigorously trying to overclock my computer!

Man, I can only imagine based on my own experience what sort of expletives were coming out of your mouth. When my stuff isn’t working there’s a lot of “WTF YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME” and “DUDE WHAT” and “ARE YOU SERIOUS” at my computer.

Maybe as a Brit/Canadian you’re more reserved.

There’s a lot of heavy sighing.
