SKUSA SuperNationals 26 - TJ Driver Diary

What do they say in Top Gear? “The fastest car on Earth is a rental.” :joy:

In a race, I don’t even think about it to be honest. But in general I think I’m pretty good at staying out of trouble out there, so it’s never really been an issue. If someone has put me in the seat of their stuff, I’ve gotta try and get the result they want, so I don’t ever really consider being extra cautious or anything like that.

On practice days or coaching days when I’m driving someone else’s stuff I’m pretty careful.

I can only speak for myself, but if you lend me a chassis I won’t really want to stack it… BUT if you’re going racing and have two-development chassis and want to use me as a test bed… then we’re gonna go full out no holes barred flat out. Otherwise what’s the point?

Also, there’s no point in going to SuperNats and trying to be careful. You need to be on the limit of aggressiveness the whole week or you’re going to get used up by everyone else out there.

Good perspective guys. As a local masters competitor in the downside of my career, I highly doubt I will ever get that chance. I’ll just live vicariously through TJ! Go get em!

I’d enjoy one day doing an old man army supernats. Do any old guys do this?

They have a Masters class and there are several older guys who come for the Las Vegas experience and jump in the kart as a secondary perk of the trip.

Edit: TJ beat me to it.

Lets do it next year Dom. I need to budget appropriately, but I always said it looks fun!

From the outside looking in, KA Masters appears to be the closest thing to a “more for fun” class. Obviously, the fast guys are super fast, but the mid pack guys are more masters level racers. Again, purely an outside view of the class.

My current plan is to get back into karting shape by the time I’m 30 and go have a run at Vegas in Masters. They used to have a Super Masters category too iirc. Honestly I think the Masters guys have the best time at Vegas out of anyone.

Hmmm. We could all pile into Montopoli’s tent program. With some planning it’s possible. I do so little 2-stroke I would be a speed bump.

If only we had a 30k annual racing development grant.

How do spouses/family enjoy the weekend? Stay home?

“You trash it, you buy it” :joy::money_with_wings:

There’s lots to do in Vegas, not just gambling.

It better for family then, let’s say, Newcastle, where there’s a kart track and fields.

My wife has been twice now I think and she isn’t a gambler and likes to go to sleep early so she did not enjoy a ton because usually me and the boys enjoy a few beverages and play blackjack until pretty late. But as Nik said there is more to do in Vegas than be a degenerate. There are cool restaurants and things to visit so family and spouses still tend to enjoy it I think.

The nice thing about SuperNats is you are either a morning or afternoon class, so you do end up having half a day each day to do whatever you want.

Newcastle IA:

Bball hall of fame and BBQ.

If we want culture Nik, we gotta go to your Newcastle:

Personally I’m fine with no culture and lots of track but I’m a degenerate

Indiana, not Iowa… extra letters

Ha! I thought that was pretty grim for a major track

I’m not sold lol.

When I took the fam in 2019 my kid mostly spent her time in the pool. We only walked around the strip on Sunday after the racing had finished. The 3 year old didn’t care for anything but the pool, we did attempt cirque du Soleil but she didn’t like the noise so we walked out after 10minutes and got ice cream.

When I went as a data guy in 2016 (I think), pre kids, we hit up some shows in the evening.

I took my 7 year old last summer. He had a TKD tournament at the MGM. It was definitely a struggle to keep things PG for him, but there were definitely plenty of options. He loved the food, the pool (not always open in November), and we hit some of the magic shows.

My wife is a relaxer. While my son and i are at the track, she will be reading by the pool or taking a nap enjoying the fact that the boys in her life are leaving her alone for once.

Ok let’s find TJ a really dangerous and stupid after race activity. Vegas must offer monster truck bungee jumping or something similar.

Change of plans: wtf is this…

If not TJ, maybe I can get Warren to go.
