Hot and humid day at MCC. Haven’t sweat that much in a long long time. Super tight grid in qualifying. Should be a fun weekend. Going to be tough to top @Kutschca and @Andy_Kutscher with the pace they’ve shown so far.
The modesty of Mr. Horan. I think we are going to have a good and competitive group fighting for podium positions.
My day was good on pace but had a couple bummers. EGT sensor issue in practice 3 lead to me chasing EGTs on my race motor for the weekend and blowing it up in that session! Mounted the backup motor for practice 4 and had great pace and confidence leading into qualifying.
Qualifying ended up breaking a reed and while it didn’t slow me down a ton, it was just enough that I was stuck leading the pack of 4 and giving them all the benefit of draft while I flailed out front trying to overdrive the power deficit.
Tomorrow is shaping up to be great, let’s all do our rain dance and keep the bad weather away!
Woof what a weekend. First of all, congrats to @Kutschca for the W and @Andy_Kutscher for making it a Kutscher bros 1-2. I knew they’d be tough to beat!!!
yesterday’s weather was exhausting, to say the least. Constant back and forth trying to make a wet / dry decision and the lengthy delay making a long daylonger. Super scary incident in the Kz masters race and glad that Frank will be OK. Threw a chain in the last lap in Heat 2 while in P10 and got shoved off track twice in the prefinal before ultimately spinning while running by myself. My battery had died on the grid for the prefinal and after it stalled on track I couldn’t get going again.
Started the final P25 and worked my way up to 9th at the stripe. Started very high on pressure to work through and hoped it would last but the kart fell off a cliff on lap 7/8.
Been making it way too hard on myself to have a good finish in the final. 2/3 races this year starting from near the tail of the field and having to move up. On to the next one.
That Saturday was the longest karting day of my life both literally and figuratively. We changed between wet and dry setups 3x and doing it for both my kart and my sons was bonkers. The first heat we were still changing to slicks on the grid when they called the 1 minute warning. Want to know why my kart was a rocket and then fell off? Cause I couldn’t set tire pressure and went out at 25 psi!!! Then for heat 2 it seemed like it might dry out so I was on a compromised setup and used “inters” rain tires….then it started pouring during the race, that strategy didn’t work and I fell like a rock. The pre final I finally had a better setup and better rain tires which actually worked. Then we were at the track till 9:45pm cleaning and putting the dry setup back on. That day felt like a week.
Thankfully Sunday was more straightforward. I’m not sure if I cooked my tires on that 25psi run or went too low on pressure but the kart never fully came in during the final but was just barely enough to hold on. Super happy that Andy and I were able to go 1-2 at our home track as normally at these big events one of us gets caught in the mayhem and we get separated.
It’s funny how we can run club weekend after club weekend with little to no issues and things are always easy going but when we show up for big races anything and everything that can go wrong will go wrong…but the one thing that is pretty predictable for me is I’ll drive off the track in the rain at the worst possible time.
I’m happy that when we got to the final everything worked how it was supposed to. Had I not been dumb in the rain and lost 4 spots on that last lap of the pre-final I think I may have had the time I needed to make the move work on Chris at the end, but coulda / shoula / woulda …he executed how he needed to and is well deserving of the win.
@ChrisHoran def gets the tough luck and hard charger award for the weekend, you had pace to be with everyone at the front but none of the luck to go with it.
The biggest bummer of the weekend was that we were soo busy constantly working on the karts and trying to adapt to the weather that we really didn’t get a chance to hang out and build relationships (drink beers with the boys) which is the greatest part of the masters field.
Starting the tear down and cleanup yesterday and found these fun changes. I knew something wasn’t exactly right with the kart at the end of the final, but thought I had really missed on tire pressure as I was struggling to get it to behave at the end of the race. Turns out I was lucky I could limp this thing home.
Wow, that is a bummer but makes what you accomplished all the more impressive. Would’ve been a lot tougher to see that had you finished 2nd or 3rd, I’m sure
As you can see from the condition of the tab, that bad boy has been welded a few times. I was feeling pretty fortunate that the bottom welds of the seat mounts had he’d strong, but we all know it’s a matter of time with an OTK especially at this weight.
I’m also cheap and try to get 2 seasons out of a chassis. Usually if I’m careful the first season doesn’t need welding or maybe just a seat tab. The second season like this one is on though that can change real quick.
