Tm k8 with k9 barrel oppinions as a first kz step

I have found an engine on our used ads here and it seems like a decent package for our first step in the kz category .

The owner said that this is a k8 engine with k9 cylinder and crankshaft in it . And the price at 1000 dollars seems honnest .

Is anyone has one of those or had one in the past and can write down some oppinion about it ??

Is the k9 a nicasil type barrel ?

If it is this is the first thing i need to check before buy something like that .

I will run a full service if i got my hands on it but i wanna hear what you have to say about the engine .

I believe it was popular when it was on its prime .

Thanks guys !

Nikasil bore yes.

That said, my 2c would be to pass on a K9 “A” unless engine your options are very limited. It’s almost a 20 year old model now. Yes they were great at their time, but definitely would be at a disadvantage to the newer models. I’d go as far to say as 0.4s, all other things being equal of course.

Thank you sir !!! Greetings from Greece!

Looking at cylinder it is a 9c may not be to bad for what you are paying newer of course can be better but we all start somewhere

Thank you glenn . I had put my engine on sale now to see what can i do .

Enother one new problem that i can see if i switch to swifter animals is that my senior chassis dont have a hole. To support the shift lever . Is this something to buy as aftermarket part ?,

Or do i need a used shifter chassis also ?

If you can get a good deal on a shifter chassis and sell your single speed that would be preferable. But I think with a couple clamps and brackets you could mount a shift mechanism.

But you will also want front brakes. So by the time you make/buy all of that you are better off getting a shifter chassis.

Yeah unfortunately OTK is one of the few that the shift lever can’t be added on with brackets since the shift shaft actual goes through the tank uprights on the OTK. You could always get a paddle setup, but you’d still need front brakes.

it’s a lot more involved than it looks to convert a 100cc chassis into gearbox.
Water pump bracket, you can buy a clamp on type. You will need a water pump pulley, water pump, rad kit, hoses, stat etc

Front brakes, probably the most difficult and expensive part of the conversion. Depending what chassis you have you might be able to use a complete kz front brake system from a KZ OTK including stubs etc. It will still be expensive.

Gear lever, nearly as tricky as the front brakes. You can potentially weld the right size tubbing on the sterring column uprights but the gear lever needs to be the right angle, size etc otherwise it won’t line up with the gear lever on the engine

You will also need a silencer and the relevant brackets, silencers can be expensive

Also a clutch lever and different type of steering hub

428 chain and sprockets

The correct type axle to take a gearbox axle sprocket

And a lot of other smaller bits to complete the package (aibox trumpets, carb jets/emulsion tubes etc)

KZ is an expensive territory to start from scratch or convert a non gearbox chassis
