I am beginning to learn about the Dellorto VHS3 30 carburetor and would like opinion on idle settings, do idle settings have anything to do with race set up? I was told that a R1 should not idle at warm up this seems strange to me, thanks.
These (and essentially all racing engines) are not designed to idle. If you’re in a situation where you need to idle, simply put the into neutral and use the throttle pedal to keep the revs around 2-3k.
When my R2 is jetting right for the track it won’t idle even with the idle speed screw all the way in. If I am starting the kart on the stand I pull the cable housing out of the interface ferrel on the frame and rest the end of the housing on the lip of it so it holds the throttle a little bit, it revs to about 4k like that.
It seems there are many opinions on this issue, many experienced karters have told that there is NO reason what so ever a racing engine should not idle?
Correct. Most engines should require you to give it some throttle input on the stand to keep running. You do not want race engines to sit there idling for long periods. You risk fouling the plugs. Get the engine up to temp on the stand. Then when ready to go, fire it up and turn your laps. Come in the pits and immediately kill the engine.
Not a master on KZs, but I believe you are also out here in Phoenix. If you see me in the pits I can come take a look at it for you.
A racing engine of any kind is designed to perform best at wide open throttle. Not sitting still at idle. You jet your carb for when your foot is flat to the floor, because that’s where it matters. If it wants to idle at that setting, cool, if not, that’s the way it’s supposed to be.
