Hi,
Im rebuilding an old 2000 tony kart Mitox.
I’ve had my first go lasering up the steering.
To get the camber neutralised ive- rotated one pill one screw hole outwards (reference line was foward)
On the other side ive rotated the pill outwards 2 screw holes.
The pills im rotating are the top ones and they are multi drilled all the way around (not the x4 holes pills at 90’)
Please can anyone tell me if this is in the acceptable range or if this too out of shape?
Sweep and castor tests seem be OK.
If the adjustment pills on each side are in the same hole, but the sniper dots don’t line up with camber than your chassis is bent. You can compromise by adjusting one side or the other to get the same camber setting. I noticed you had tow in. You do not want tow in on a kart, you want at least half to one box tow out.
Ok thanks for that.
Agreed, i’ve counteracted the difference with the camber pills but i dont know if this is acceptable or if i need to take it someone to straighten it.
I dont know how bent is too bent if that makes sense?
Thanks.
This is setup 1 side camber neutral and the other side x 2 holes to get it to match… is that still ok?
Thanks i will correct the tow later on it.
Actually i just realised i might have made a mistake. If you are adjusting the top pills should you rotate both sides the same direction… so both clockwise for example. I was moving them in opposing directions when adjusting.
Opposite directions. FL = Clockwise for positive camber. FR = Counterclockwise for positive camber
At first glance it might not be that the chassis is off or bent, but the toe being that far out tells me you need to set the sweep first before anything else.
Set the camber pills to stock and equal on both sides so the dash is pointing straight forward. Make sure the bottom pills are also the same. Then set sweep and toe.
Hi thanks ive watched that video quite a few times.
Im finding the sweep angle difficult to measure because the point the lasers dots stop is actually on the steering shaft itself. I figured that must be because its a 25 year old chassis?
Its even both sides though. Ive corrected the tow and ive got the dots correct. The pills dont look the same still though.
Heres a few pics if anyone can tell anything.
Steering centered first.
Second is the point the stub axel stops before it goes backwards. You can see it points to the shaft
I personally measure off the steering column support and not the steering shaft for the same reason, but you can just place a ruler on the floor tray since you have the old style round tubes.
Did you look at the bottom pills? Are they also clocked the same way?
Please set everything to neutral. Set all pills top and bottom with the mark straight forward (Count the number of holes from the bolt to the dash to make sure it’s equal). Set the sweep so it’s equal side to side. Move the steering wheel so the lasers are pointing directly at each other (3:42 in the above video), then post a picture of what the snipers are reading. Do not adjust toe or make any camber adjustments just yet.
When you align the lasers in the center of the kart if they are far off vertically then you might have a bent chassis.
I can’t get this better with adjusting the tie rods.
By moving the RH top pill inwards by x2 holes, i can sort this out.
Then-
If i center the lasers horizontally on each other across the kart, by evening the tie rods then my ruler measurements on the front are 239.5 and 236.5 so 3mm out.
No worries. Glad to help. I’d say the chassis does have a small amount of twist or bend to it. Honestly for a kart this age it’s not that far off and I’ve had some out of the box worse than that.
The correct way to fix this is to go to a shop and have them try to straighten it for you.
But if you are just putting this kart together to have some fun, you can get by with adjusting the pills like you are.
I would try to adjust both sides one hole instead of doing everything on one side with two holes. By just adjusting a single side two holes you are making one side have a good amount less caster than the other. To me that is more important than having the camber slightly off.
Yeah agreed, i think if it was straight i’d have got it done by now (the amount of time ive spent ha). I can get it lasering up’ but it seems to be that the front right slightly out of alignment.
My last kart 12 years ago i learned the basics tyres, track widths etc but I could never get handling better than 65%… i did a few tests with a team and the difference was like night and day. I didn’t get to learn steering and ride height setup back then so im making up for lost time now.
As this is my dream Formula A kart im building (didnt race when i was younger) i think i will get the rear Axle mounted and take it to a straightening guy…
A million thank you’s for this i’ve learned loads buddy.
